This game encompasses all the familiar tropes, elements, and fundamental aspects that are characteristic of a Final Fantasy game. In the following list, we will delve into these shared elements, which Final Fantasy 16 impressively fulfills in every regard.

10 A new story for the crystals

Final Fantasy 16 Joshua Adult

Final Fantasy 16 carries the DNA of the Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries of games (Final Fantasy 13Final Fantasy 15, and Final Fantasy Type-0), and this is very apparent in its focus on the Mother Crystals and how they play a significant role in the story as a source of power and divine influence.

You can also think of the Eikons and Dominants as Fal’cie and L’cie, respectively. Ancient gods (Fal’cie, Eikon) who give power to certain humans (L’cie, Dominants) to do their bidding, which is very obvious with Clive — the protagonist of FF16 and the Dominant of the Eikon Ifrit — as well as Cid, Jill, Joshua, Benedikta, and the rest of the Dominants.

9 Religious Allusions

Final Fantasy 16 King Dion

Final Fantasy 16 continues the series’ tradition of incorporating religious allusions into its narrative (Final Fantasy 6’s allegory of the Divine Comedy and Final Fantasy 7’s take on the Lurian Kabalā are notable examples).

This is evident in the way the Mother Crystals are considered an object of worship in places like the Crystalline Orthodoxy. The High Priest of the Orthodoxy, Imreann, would slaughter magic-weilding Bearers in the name of “merely cleansing them of their corruption”. He also uses Jill to do his bidding, enslaving her to kill people in the name of his false crusade.

8 Apocalyptic Setting

Clive Fire And Ice Final Fantasy 16

In keeping with the religious inspirations, most Final Fantasy games depict an ending world on the verge of destruction (Final Fantasy 6’s Cataclysm, Final Fantasy 15’s Long Night, and Final Fantasy 10, which is literally a post-apocalyptic game in and of itself).

The same is true in Final Fantasy 16, where the Blight environmental disaster is sweeping the world, slowly draining the lands of their energy and Aether. As a result, Clive, Jill, and Cid work together to save the world by destroying the Mother Crystals (the source of the Blight), in addition to dealing with wars and other political issues.

7 Flower Symbolism

Final Fantasy 16 Flowers

Flowers have always been a part of Final Fantasy’s story allegories to symbolize character relationships. Aerith’s flowers in Final Fantasy 7 are the most notable example, symbolizing her reunion with her ex-boyfriend Zack through Cloud.

There are also the Galbana lilies in Final Fantasy 12, the beloved flowers of Vaan’s brother Reks, and Lightning’s pink rose motif in Final Fantasy 13. The pink flower is said to be a deliberate design choice by the developer to symbolize her grace.

Flowers are also used as a symbolic tool in Final Fantasy 16’s Priceless side-quest, where Jill compares her relationship with Clive to the whiteoaks, and how they used to soothe her when she felt lonely and trapped by the prospect of a marriage she never wanted.

6 Diverse Architecture

Final Fantasy 16 Oriflamme

Final Fantasy’s fictional worlds are known for drawing inspiration from various mythologies and civilizations. We have Final Fantasy 12 drawing inspiration from Mediterranean countries, as well as some Indian and American countries. And there’s Final Fantasy 10, which combines the traditional houses of Southeast Asian coastal communities with the Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles of more advanced cities.

Final Fantasy 7 also draws inspiration from all over the world (New York, Portugal, France, China and Tokyo), which is especially evident in the remake version.

Final Fantasy 16 is no different, drawing inspiration from medieval architectural aesthetics and incorporating elements of Gothic and Renaissance architecture in many locations, such as Oriflamme, the capital of the Sanbreque Empire, and the Middle Eastern/Mediterranean Ran’dellah, so you always feel in touch with reality when playing FF games.

5 Fictional Languages

Final Fantasy 16 Bounty Hunt

While it’s not as plot-relevant as, say, Final Fantasy 10’s Al Bhed, it’s obvious that the world of Final Fantasy 16 has its own set of writing systems and fictionalized scripts.

If we zoom in on the notebooks in the shops, we can see that there’s a language similar to our real-world Latin script, but also another pictographic language on the huntboards that shows a script similar to the pictographic writing system of Final Fantasy 14’s Eoreza.

Ifrit also speaks to Clive in an incomprehensible ancient/astral-like language, similar to Bahamut’s speech in Final Fantasy 15 (though that one was later patched to human speech instead of Astral speech).

4 War And Politics

Final Fantasy 16 Titan Introduction

Several Final Fantasy games incorporate war and politics into their stories, such as Final Fantasy 6’s depiction of a power-hungry empire, Tactics’ Wartorn landscape, and the effects of these wars on individuals such as Vaan in Final Fantasy 12 and Noctis in Final Fantasy 15.

Following in their footsteps, Final Fantasy 16 relies heavily on political intrigue to tell its story. Its story spans five regions with different sovereign entities and ruling systems, and explores how these ruling systems and wars between nations affect and divide individuals.

3 Next Level JRPG Design

Final fantasy 16 Ifrit vs Clive

Throughout its history, the Final Fantasy series has pushed the boundaries of the JRPG genre, raising the bar for visual presentation with each new installment.

Final Fantasy 7, for example, popularized the concept of a 3D environment with meticulously crafted, pre-rendered backgrounds. Final Fantasy 10 further enhanced the storytelling experience with stunning cinematics that still stand the test of time. In addition, Final Fantasy 13’s advanced graphics proved so demanding that players were forced to upgrade from a CRT to an LCD display, as the former couldn’t adequately handle the game’s visual fidelity at the time.

Final Fantasy 16 delivers a similar revolution in boss battles and combat innovation. Not only is it a remarkable game in its own right, but it also sets a new standard for the evolution of JRPGs and the captivating nature of boss encounters in games.

2 Divisivness

Final Fantasy 16 Clive and Young Clive

Having different and even negative opinions about each Final Fantasy title has always been the norm, and we might as well consider it part of the series’ identity at this point.

This is a byproduct of the series’ tendency to establish a new style and focus with each entry, which can alienate some old fans while appealing to those who might fall in love with the new, changed direction. There aren’t many IPs that are able to constantly change and evolve to the point of creating almost separate fan bases for each title, so Final Fantasy is special in that regard too.

1 Prelude (Crystal Theme)

Final Fantasy 16 Mother Crystal

For many, Final Fantasy 16 kicked off with the first Eikon battle between Ifrit and Garuda. But several players realized that this was indeed a Final Fantasy game when I first heard the Prelude theme, the most iconic and defining piece of music in the Final Fantasy series.

When you arrive at the first Mother Crystal location in Oriflamme with Cid and Jill, you find yourself immediately immersed in the sense of serenity, wonder, and nostalgia that Nobuo Uematsu’s music never fails to evoke. It’s also really strange to think that Uematsu composed the theme in 10 minutes as a last-minute addition to the series, only to have it later become the most iconic and signature tune of a long-running series.
