At times, movies can have too many cameos and Easter eggs, which can be overwhelming. However, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has managed to incorporate a vast number of multiverse worlds and references successfully. The movie even offers a surprising explanation for the question of how Morbius‘ post-credits scenes featured the MCU’s Vulture after Doctor Strange’s multiverse spell was corrected.

Across the Spider-Verse Finally Solves Morbius’ Controversial Vulture Plot Hole

Despite the numerous delays and changes in direction, Morbius was a film that attempted to reference Spider-Man in its trailers but then severed all ties to the character in the final cut. The post-credits scene of the movie provided a convoluted link to the MCU. The scenes showcased Michael Keaton’s Vulture being thrown from his MCU jail cell into the Sony Spider-Man Universe. Although Tom Hardy’s Venom faced a similar situation, the character was returned to his own universe by the end of the movie. In contrast, Toomes was allowed to remain in Sony’s universe and meet Morbius to discuss a Spider-Man that Morbius should have no knowledge of.

In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Miles Morales and other Spider-Man counterparts are seen preventing a disaster caused by Kingpin’s Super Collider. However, the Collider’s powers caused an unplanned side effect, leading to various Spider-Man villains, including Donald Glover’s Prowler from the MCU and a version of Vulture, being thrown into completely different universes in the form of “incursions.” If everything that occurs in the Spider-Verse movies is linked to the wider multiverse, this could be the reason why Michael Keaton’s Vulture was thrown into the world of Morbius.

Will Morbius Return to the Big Screen?

Although Morbius was a commercial failure, Sony has committed to bringing the character back in some form. It is unclear if this will be another solo project or a team-up movie. It seems unlikely that anyone at Sony would want to revisit the trauma of making Morbius anytime soon.

This year will be a crucial one for Sony’s live-action movie plans, with Kraven the Hunter being the next film to attempt to generate interest in the Spider-Man villains universe, which is being slowly put together for an unknown purpose. Although the movie is set to release on October 6, 2023, the general public is yet to see any footage. However, a reel shown at CinemaCon in April was well-received, thanks to its R-rated level of blood and violence and the appearance of another Spider-Man villain, The Rhino.

Kraven the Hunter will be followed by Madame Web, which will bring another strand to the tapestry being woven around the world of Spider-Man, all without the main web-slinger himself. Although Sony has had success with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, their live-action offerings have yet to reach the same level of acclaim, proving that it doesn’t mean a thing if it ain’t got Spidey’s swing.

Despite the movie crashing and burning – twice – in theaters, Sony have virtually committed to bringing Morbius back for another movie in some form. Whether this is as part of the team up movie or another solo project is not yet known, but the idea of anyone at Sony wanting to go through the trauma of Morbius all over again seems very unlikely right now.

This year will be a big test for Sony’s live-action movie plans, with Kraven the Hunter being the next up to try and make people care about the Spider-Man villains universe being slowly put together for an as yet unknown purpose. Footage of the movie is yet to be revealed to the general public, even with the film supposedly releasing on October 6, 2023, but a reel shown at CinemaCon back in April seemed to please those who saw it thanks to its R-rated lever of blood and violence, and an appearance by another Spider-Man villain, The Rhino.

Kraven the Hunter will be followed by Madame Web which is set to bring yet another strand to the tapestry being woven around the world of Spider-Man, but all without the main web-slinger himself. Sony may have struck the big time with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse but their live-action offerings have so far proven it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got Spidey’s swing.
