Al Roker ‘glad to be alive’ on 69th birthday following health scare

Al Roker expressed immense gratitude as he celebrated his 69th birthday on Sunday, reflecting on the previous year’s health scare that had landed him in the hospital for several weeks. In an Instagram video posted during his brisk walk, Roker shared, “This is my 69th anniversary of orbiting the sun, and after everything I went through at the end of last year, I am more than grateful to be celebrating this birthday. To all of you who sent good wishes and well wishes over the past year, god bless you. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.”

The beloved host of the “Today” show also took the opportunity to express his gratitude towards his wife, Deborah Roberts, 62, and his three children, Courtney, 36, Leila, 24, and Nick, 21. Additionally, Roker expressed his joy over his new granddaughter, Sky, who was welcomed into the family by his eldest daughter in July.

Roker emphasized how grateful he is to be alive as he celebrated his 69th birthday. He captioned the video with, “Grateful for another trip around the sun,” and also shared a photo of his delectable birthday meal from Hudson Valley restaurant Bimi’s Canteen & Bar.

Throughout his recovery, Roker expressed his appreciation for his wife, Deborah, for her unwavering support. He also gave a special shoutout to his children for their love and care.

Roker’s birthday celebration included a delightful dinner at Bimi’s Canteen & Bar, where he enjoyed a steak, potatoes, greens, and a glass of red wine. He also indulged in a chicken course and various appetizers, such as green olives, fresh bread, Shishito peppers, and salad.

In addition to his birthday festivities, Roker cherished precious moments with his granddaughter, Sky, sharing a heartwarming photo of himself cradling her. He described her as the “Best #birthdaypresent” on Instagram.

Last November, Roker faced a health crisis that resulted in his hospitalization for blood clots in his legs and lungs, as well as two bleeding ulcers. He underwent multiple surgeries, including a re-sectioning of his colon, gallbladder removal, and a procedure on his small intestine. Reflecting on this frightening experience, Roker humorously mentioned, “I went in for one operation and got four free.” The recovery period caused him to miss hosting the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, a tradition he had upheld for 27 years.

Six months later, Roker found himself back in the hospital for a successful knee surgery. His wife revealed that his fatigue and frustration with his health had contributed to the decision. Roker has faced various health challenges in recent years, including a prostate cancer diagnosis in November 2020, which required surgery. However, he returned to the “Today” show just two weeks after the procedure, displaying his resilience and determination.

Al Roker was filled with gratitude while celebrating his 69th birthday on Sunday after last year’s health scare that left him hospitalized for weeks.

“This is my 69th anniversary of orbiting the sun and after everything that I went through at the end of last year I am more than grateful to be celebrating this birthday,” Roker said in an Instagram video on Sunday as he went for a brisk walk.

Last November, Roker was absent from the “Today” show after being hospitalized for weeks for blood clots in his legs and lungs, and two bleeding ulcers. The Daytime Emmy winner’s medical team re-sectioned his colon, removed his gallbladder and redid his duodenum in his small intestine.

“I lost half my blood. They were trying to figure out where it was,” Roker recalled on the “Today” show of his “frightening” health scare, joking that he “went in for one operation [and] got four free.”

During his recovery, Roker missed hosting the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time in 27 years.

Six months after his health scare, Roker was back in the hospital when he had a successful knee surgery.

His wife told TheFantasyTimes in May, “More than anything else — with his body fatigue — he just had a moment where he is sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

Roker has been struggling with his health in recent years. In November 2020, he revealed he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had to undergo surgery. He was back on the “Today” show two weeks after the procedure.
