Alan Wake 2 Dev Defends Digital-Only Release

Some fans of the upcoming game Alan Wake 2 are disappointed that there won’t be a physical release, and the developer has now explained the reasoning behind this decision. There has been some discussion about digital-only releases for AAA games like Alan Wake 2, with many fans concerned about what seems to be a growing trend among major developers.

Some of the main concerns around digital-only releases are well-established. Ironically, the original Alan Wake was removed from digital storefronts for over a year due to music licensing issues. Although it was eventually made available once everything was resolved, the fact remains that the game was unavailable for purchase for 17 months. Game collectors and preservationists are generally vocal about the importance of physical releases, as there is always a possibility that a digital storefront will close at some point, and physical releases ensure the game is still playable if this happens.

Kyle Rowley, the game director of Alan Wake 2, has defended the decision to release the game digitally only. In an interview with Eurogamer, Rowley explained that this route allows the team “more time to polish the game” and that the game that goes on a physical release would have to be playable without a patch several weeks ahead of launch. This is called “going gold,” which refers to a version of the game (the “gold master” version) that the publisher deems ready to ship. By skipping this step and releasing the game digitally only, Remedy can continue working on Alan Wake 2 until the launch day.

There are a few ways Alan Wake fans can view this news. One perspective is optimistic; it would be unfortunate if Alan Wake 2 was saved on a physical medium in an unplayable state, and it would also be distasteful to release a physical copy of the game that is nothing more than a DRM key on a disc. Remedy has done well to manage fans’ expectations, but Rowley’s comments may increase concerns about Alan Wake 2 following its light gameplay trailer during Summer Game Fest.

It’s possible that digital-only releases are becoming a third option for developers who have to decide between releasing a game that isn’t ready or delaying it. However, the developers of Alan Wake 2 have expressed confidence in their work in the context of its October release, with the month typically being full of exciting horror releases leading up to Halloween.

Alan Wake 2 is set to be released in 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

There are a few ways fans of Alan Wake can look at this news. The first one is in the light of optimism; it certainly would be remiss if Alan Wake 2 was immortalized on a physical medium in an unplayable state, and it would also be in poor taste to ship a physical copy of the game that is little more than a DRM key on a disc. Remedy has done well to temper fans’ expectations, but Rowley’s words might exacerbate some concerns about Alan Wake 2 after its Summer Game Fest trailer was a little light on gameplay.

It could be that digital-only releases are becoming a third option for developers who are deciding between releasing a game that they don’t feel is ready or delaying it. That said, the developers of Alan Wake 2 have spoken confidently about their work in the context of its October release, with the month typically being saturated with exciting horror releases in the build-up to Halloween.

Alan Wake 2 is scheduled to release in 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
