Surviving the onslaught of Xenomorphs on a remote planet is no easy feat, and the Colonial Marines in Aliens: Dark Descent are no exception. Trauma is one of the game’s survival features, causing Marines to develop trait-specific debuffs that lower their combat ability. This article explains what traumas are in Aliens: Dark Descent, how they occur, and how to remove them.

What Are Traumas in Aliens: Dark Descent?

As Marines are subjected to regular combat and horrific situations, they develop trait-specific debuffs that decrease their combat ability. Traumas occur after a Marine reaches their breaking point when reaching the Terrified stress level, the third and final level of the stress meter. Upon hitting stress level three, the individual Marine will have accumulated 3 Trauma Points, which leads to a Trauma debuff.

There are numerous Traumas scattered throughout the game, and it’s impossible to predict which ones the player’s squad members will receive. The two most notable Traumas, which are quite detrimental to any mission, include Depressive and Claustrophobia.

The Colonial Marines in Aliens: Dark Descent are put into a rough spot, and no one comes away without a few scares—physical and mental. One of the survival features of this Aliens game is the trauma system — Marines subjected to regular combat and horrific situations develop trait-specific debuffs that lower their combat ability.

    However, there are numerous ways to remove trauma from the Colonial Marines. But it’s not as simple as popping a stimulant or letting the Marines rest for a day or two aboard the Otago. It takes work and a few notable unlocks.



    What Are Traumas in Aliens: Dark Descent?

    Like with stress levels in Aliens: Dark Descent, there are varying degrees of trauma that Colonial Marines endure over time. These negative stat debuffs typically occur after a Marine reaches their breaking point when reaching the Terrified stress level — the third and final level of the stress meter. Upon hitting stress level three, the individual Marine will have accumulated 3 Trauma Points, which leads to a Trauma debuff. If they receive three more Trauma Points, that initial debuff upgrades to an even worse version with more powerful debuffs.

    There are countless Traumas scattered throughout the game, and it’s a gamble as to which the player’s squad members will receive in the line of combat. The two most notable Traumas, which are quite detrimental to any mission, include Depressive and Claustrophobia.

    • Depressive will lead to higher stress levels, as the Marine with the Depressive trait begins each mission with 30 points of stress immediately.
    • Claustrophobiaon the other hand, means that resting in a shelter no longer reduces stress for that Marine. It’s a significant hindrance.

    How To Remove Traumas

    To reiterate, Traumas occur when the player cannot quickly and satisfactorily reduce stress levels. Bringing a Colonial Marine into a combat mission when they have a Trauma can prove detrimental to the entire squad and the overall objective’s success.

    Players must first unlock the Psychiatric Care Unit aboard the Otago to successfully cure Traumas. This secondary medical clinic will become available upon completing Mission 2: Berkeley’s Docks, which will take most players between 2 and 6 hours to finish, depending on play style and pacing.

    Once Traumas develop, it’s recommended to leave the afflicted Marine in the PCU; over time, their Traumas will dissipate entirely. It can take a few days, though, so remain patient.

    But, that’s not the only way to eliminate Traumas from Marines. If the player can level up the affected Marine and randomly roll the Mind of Steel attributeit’s entirely possible to remove Traumas altogether from that specific Marine. It does take three days for full removal, but that’s worth the wait for a combat veteran on Lethe.
