Thirteen Conversations About One Thing is one of director Jill Sprecher’s most acclaimed pieces, a production in which she also served as screenwriter along with her sister Karen Sprecher. This 2001 film features five unrelated people whose lives intertwine as a result of different events. As the characters try to achieve what each of them considers happiness, the film demonstrates the extent to which our actions can impact the lives of others.

McConaughey plays Troy, an ambitious lawyer with a rising career whose future is put on the line after injuring a woman in an irresponsible car accident. The actor is joined in the cast by John Turturro, Clea DuVall, Alan Arkin, and Amy Irving. Beatrice, the character played by DuVall, draws inspiration from the director’s first months living in Manhattan after graduating, in which she had to experience a few robberies and unfortunate situations.

Ten years after the premiere of Thirteen Conversations About One ThingMcConaughey played a lawyer again, this time for Brad Furman’s The Lincoln Lawyer. This production, adapted from Michael Connelly’s literary work, follows Mick Haller, an attorney who makes a living defending low-end criminals while riding in his Lincoln Town Car. Haller’s life seems to take a turn when he gets his hands on the case of Louis Roulet, a young man from a very wealthy family who is accused of attempting to murder a prostitute, yet he denies everything. As much as he believes this to be the case of a lifetime, circumstances prove otherwise, and he quickly realizes that things are murkier than they seem at first.

Ryan Phillippe, Marisa Tomei, Josh Lucas, William H. Macy, and Bryan Cranston are among the actors joining Matthew in the cast of this production. The Lincoln Lawyer is not the only adaptation of Michael Connelly’s work: a TV series bearing the same name premiered on Netflix in 2022, with Manuel Garcia-Rulfo playing the lead role.

8 Bernie – 88%

Once again playing the role of a lawyer, McConaughey starred in Richard Linklater’s dark comedy Bernie alongside Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine. This 2011 production is based on a real case from 1996, and follows Bernie, a thirty-something man adored by everyone who works in a Carthage funeral home and strikes up a relationship with Marjorie Nugent, a widow who is much older than him and loathed by the whole town. After some time navigating this tumultuous relationship, Bernie grows tired of being emotionally abused and ends up murdering Marjorie. Despite admitting his culpability, he is shocked to enjoy the support of his fellow citizens at Carthage.

Bernie earned rave reviews and nominations for all of the lead actors. For his work as Danny Buck Davidson, McConaughey was recognized as Best Supporting Actor by the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics.

7 Lone Star — 92%

Lone Star is a film by John Sayles that became one of the best indie productions of the 1990s, as well as a box office sensation. Released in 1996 and featuring a cast comprising Chris Cooper, Matthew McConaughey, Kris Kristofferson and Elizabeth Peña, Lone Star follows Sam, the Rio County sheriff who finds himself investigating the disappearance and murder of a former sheriff.

However, as he gets deeper into the investigation, this young man finds himself unearthing secrets that could completely redefine the town’s opinion about his father, the late and beloved Sheriff Buddy Deeds (played by Matthew McConaughey). This Sayles film received, among other accolades, an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

6 Dazed and Confused — 92%

1993’s Dazed and Confused is one of the first films in McConaughey’s portfolio, yet it still stands as one of his best productions. In addition, it helped him become iconic with his popular line “Alright, alright, alright.” It was the first collaboration between the actor and Richard Linklater, and while it performed poorly at the box office, it eventually became a cult classic that is worshipped to this day.

Dazed and Confused stars Jason London, Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Cole Hauser, Parker Posey and Adam Goldberg, among other actors, and follows a group of teenagers in Austin, Texas as they enjoy their last day of high school in May ’76, while the incoming freshmen do their best to avoid being pranked by the older kids.

The 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club was the one that won McConaughey his first Academy Award for Best Actor. This production, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack, is based on the life story of Ron Woodroofa man who, in the 1980s, gets diagnosed with AIDS with a 30-day prognosis. Desperate to find a treatment, Woodroof tries several alternative therapies and unapproved drugs, which he then starts selling illegally to other patients in the same situation.

Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto, Denis O’Hare and Steve Zahn are among the actors who join McConaughey in the cast of this acclaimed production that received, among other accolades, six Academy Award nominations and won in the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Makeup and Hairstyling categories. For their roles in the film, both McConaughey and Leto had to undergo a physical transformation and shed an enormous amount of weight.

This film follows Kubo, a young Japanese boy who earns his living making magical origami with the help of his shamisen and telling stories around town.
