Best Movies Coming to Apple TV+ in July 2023

As the end of the month approaches, major streaming services gear up for the next by releasing a collection of their new and anticipated titles. This July, Apple TV+ takes the spotlight. Launched in November 2019, around the same time as Disney+, the service marks the tech giant’s entry into the increasingly crowded streaming market. While not as dominant as Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, Apple’s streaming service has proven its worth with remarkable content. The Morning Show, Severance, and Ted Lasso are just some of the scripted titles that have won acclaim for the platform. On the film side, CODA, their hit movie, earned Best Picture at the 2022 Oscars, making it the first film distributed by a streaming service to win the honor. Apple has quickly shown that its streaming service can stand with the best in the industry.

Apple offers something for everyone in July, whether you’re a fan of sports documentaries, factual-based comedies, or biographical dramas about the danger of going into business with friends. Here’s everything you need to know about the best new movies arriving on the platform this July.

Stephen Curry: Underrated

Stephen Curry: Underrated is a documentary that follows Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, regarded as one of the all-time greatest basketball players, as he rose from an average college player to one of the league’s most dominant champions. Directed by Peter Nicks, known for his documentaries on contemporary social issues, the film showcases Curry’s entire run with the Warriors, culminating in their most recent NBA Finals victory in the 2021-22 season. The documentary will premiere on Apple TV+ on July 21, 2023, in addition to a select theatrical release.

The Beanie Bubble

The Beanie Bubble is a movie that closely examines one of the biggest pop culture fads of the 90s: the immortal Beanie Baby. Based on Zac Bissonnette’s book The Great Beanie Baby Bubble: Mass Delusion and the Dark Side of Cute, the film illustrates the so-called “dark side” of the smiling, plush stuffed animal industry. The movie pulls back the curtain on the hidden secrets of the brand’s success and centers on three women who helped propel the company to success. The Beanie Bubble explores how the system “broke” the women as it bounces back and forth from the ’80s to the ’90s. The movie will premiere on Apple TV+ on July 28, with a select theatrical release coming one week earlier on July 21.

Reese Enterprises

Reese Enterprises is a biographical drama that centers on a Florida-based product design major and his three roommates, who accidentally create a life-saving medical device and instantly come into money and success. They begin to turn on each other after tasting their newfound riches, showing why going into business with friends is anything but a safe bet. The movie aims for an unspecified date in July.

This Golden State Warriors point guard is regarded as one of the all-time greatest basketball players. Specifically, he’s often singled out as the league’s best shooter. Curry debuted with the Golden State Warriors in the 2009 season, where he has been ever since. The Warriors won the NBA Finals with Curry in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022 and finished as runner-ups in 2016 and 2019. Given Curry’s status as a modern basketball icon, this documentary is definitely one to watch.

Stephen Curry: Underrated comes from director Peter Nicks, known for his documentaries on contemporary social issues. Nicks’ films include The Waiting Rooma documentary on a California safety-net hospital, The Forcewhich depicted reforms at the Oakland Police Department, and an episode of PBS’ Air: America’s Investigative Reports on the Iraq War. Just from that filmography alone, we can tell this will be a very different outing for the seasoned filmmaker.

Underrated begins with Curry’s 2008 NCAA Tournament run with the Davidson Wildcats. It follows him through his entire run with the Warriors, culminating in their most recent NBA Finals victory in the 2021-22 season. That victory also earned Curry the NBA Finals MVP award. First premiering at Sundance on January 23, 2023, Underrated will stream on Apple TV+ on July 21, 2023, in addition to a select theatrical release.

The Beanie Bubble (July 28)

Shifting gears, this movie closely examines one of the biggest pop culture fads of the 90s: the immortal Beanie Baby.

Based on Zac Bissonnette’s book The Great Beanie Baby Bubble: Mass Delusion and the Dark Side of Cute, this film illustrates the so-called “dark side” of the smiling, plush stuffed animal industry. College dropout Ty Warner established the brand in the early 90s with no significant distribution or advertising plan.

However, Warner struck gold, as the stuffed babies skyrocketed in popularity thanks in large part to collectors. Beanie Babies have been called one of the first modern Internet-era consumer crazes. Those who experienced the 90s will remember that the craze died out just as fast as it began, with the stuffed critters going from priceless to worthless practically overnight.

The Beanie Bubble will pull back the curtain on the hidden secrets of the brand’s success. In particular, it centers on three women who helped Ty Warner propel the company to success. Eagle-eyed fans may note the red heart with the word “Ty” on each baby’s tag. But none of the women who helped Warner got to see their names on a tag. The Beanie Bubble explores how the system quite literally “broke” the women as it bounces back and forth from the ’80s to the ’90s.

Zach Galifianakis leads the cast as stuffed animal magnate Ty Warner. Elizabeth Banks is Robbie, Warner’s business partner. Succession‘s Sarah Snook plays Sheila, a mother of two and love interest for Warner, and Geraldine Viswanathan is Maya, a tech genius at the height of the early ’90s Internet boom. Additional cast members include Kurt Yaeger, Tracey Bonner, and Carl Clemons-Hopkins. Viewers can take in the story of the sinister side of the stuffed babies when the film premieres on Apple TV+ on July 28, with a select theatrical release coming one week earlier on July 21.
