Blacksmith’s Blues Side Quest Guide
At the start of Final Fantasy 16’s Here Be Monsters main quest, Clive will make his way back to The Hideaway, where he and Jill will gear up before setting off to the isle of Drustanus. However, players will have the opportunity to undertake two new side quests by locating their quest-givers in The Hideaway and engaging with them.
Final Fantasy 16’s Blacksmith’s Blues side quest requires Clive to find a way to cheer up Blackthorne, The Hideaway’s blacksmith. Initially, this may seem like a simple task, but it can be challenging to complete if Clive has not yet reached Level 28.
To begin the Blacksmith’s Blues side quest in Final Fantasy 16, Clive must journey to The Mess area in The Hideaway and speak to August, who can be found gazing out at the horizon in the southeast corner. August will then inform Clive of his concern for Blackthorne, The Hideaway’s only blacksmith. Unfortunately, this quest-giver has no idea what’s troubling him, so it’s up to Clive to find out for himself.
After accepting the quest from August, Clive should backtrack to the Boarding Deck and head north into the Main Deck. By turning left and taking the first right, he will arrive at The Black Hammer, where Blackthorne’s Forge is located. Blackthorne can be seen standing behind his anvil, and when Clive interacts with him, August will appear. August will then ask Blackthorne what’s bothering him, and Blackthorne will express his feeling that his forging skills are not up to scratch anymore. Clive will begin searching for a beautifully crafted Leather Cuirass to reignite the blacksmith’s passion for his craft.
When the conversation ends, Clive can turn right to locate and speak to Charon, just to the right of The Black Hammer’s entrance. While conversing with her, she informs Clive that she has already sold the Leather Cuirass.
Whoever purchased the Leather Cuirass from Charon is a leatherworker, and their next job requires them to locate and defeat a Griffin named Dozmare. Clive can use this knowledge to track down the individual, but before he sets off from The Hideaway, he should first enter The Mess and interact with Nectar the Moogle standing next to the Hunt Board. Upon speaking with Nektar, players must select the “Ask about griffin sightings” option; then, they can inspect the Hunt Board to learn where the Griffin (also known as Dosing) is located.
The quickest way to reach Dozmare the Griffin’s domain is to fast-travel to the Lostwing Obelisk and follow the road leading through Cutter’s Gate. When Clive eventually gets to the Caer Norvent River Gate, he can head south toward the castle’s wall to begin the battle.
Dozmare can be a pretty deceptive enemy, as most of its initial attacks are easy to avoid and take advantage of. However, the battle becomes more challenging once the creature’s health reaches the halfway point. During this phase, Dozmare will begin using some seriously dangerous wind-based attacks that can take significant chunks off of Clive’s health. Players should ensure that Clive is fully stocked up on healing items before beginning the battle.
For the most part, players can get by if they simply dodge the Dozmare’s physical attacks. One of the creature’s most dangerous tricks sees it ascending into the sky and surrounding itself in a small tornado. If Clive happens to be standing within the tornado’s range, he can dodge away to avoid taking damage. The Dozmare’s Noble Dive attack can also be a little tricky to deal with; the aftermath of this move produces a pretty big shockwave, so if players want to ensure Clive doesn’t get hit, they should back away the moment they see the “Noble Dive” text appear above Dozmare’s body.
Being a Griffin, Dozmare will regularly take to the skies to perform a variety of attacks. Clive’s physical attacks aren’t as reliable during these moments, but players can make up for this by relying on Ramuh’s ranged abilities. Not only can these attacks reach the creature when it’s airborne, but they can also deal some pretty decent damage. Ramuh’s projectile abilities can be used from a distance, so Clive doesn’t need to get too close to Dozmare when relying on them. If Clive is underleveled and players feel that Dozmare is too powerful for him, they may need to level Clive up to even the playing field.
As a reward for defeating Dozmare, Clive will receive 1 Scarletite and 1 Meteorite, both of which can be used to craft and upgrade his gear. When the dust settles, the leatherworker Clive was looking for can be found directly south of the battlefield. After speaking to him, he will give Clive some Treated Leather to pass on to Blackthorne.
Clive can return to The Black Hammer and speak to Blackthorne to hand over the Treated Leather. After a conversation, the quest will end, and Clive will receive a Drakeslayer’s Belt Design Draft, a recipe needed to craft the Drakeslayer’s Belt.
