Emerging actors are notorious for going to extreme measures to secure their breakthrough, and Bradley Cooper was no exception. As per Cynthia Nixon, renowned for her portrayal in Sex and the City, Cooper fabricated his ability to operate a manual transmission in order to secure the role of Jake, a romantic interest to Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw, in the iconic HBO series, CNN discovers.

Nixon unveiled this anecdote during her appearance on Watch What Happens Live. She disclosed that Cooper, desperate to land his first job, falsely claimed that he could drive a stick shift. However, when the time arrived to demonstrate his proficiency, he confessed that he lacked the skill.

In response, director and writer Michael Patrick King had to make alterations to the script. They modified the scene to have Carrie Bradshaw exit a Karmann Ghia and walk home on her own, eliminating the need for Cooper’s character to drive.

Reflecting on this awkward situation, Cooper himself mentioned in a 2012 interview with Backstage Magazine that he even enrolled in a brief driving school in Manhattan to learn how to operate a manual transmission in time for filming. However, his experience with a 1962 Porsche convertible proved to be challenging, and with Parker in the passenger seat, a decision was made to use a stand-in until they arrived at the shooting location.

Cooper’s little white lie ultimately worked in his favor, as he successfully portrayed Jake in the Season 2 episode titled “They Shoot Single People, Don’t They?” where his character encounters Carrie Bradshaw after her unflattering magazine shoot.

Cooper joins the ranks of attractive leading men in Hollywood who have played suitors on the popular series, including David Duchovny, Justin Theroux (in two roles), and Bon Jovi.

It appears that sometimes a minor fabrication can pave the way for significant opportunities in the fiercely competitive world of acting, and Cooper’s case serves as a testament to the lengths actors may go to secure a coveted role.
