Bridgerton Season 3’s Steamiest Penelope & Colin Scene Teased By Star
Bridgerton season 3 is set to bring forth a romantic and spicy central romance, as revealed by star Nicola Coughlan. Based on Julia Quinn’s novel series of the same name, the Regency-era romance series follows the love life of a different member of the Bridgerton family each season. For this upcoming season, the focus will be on Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) and his love affair with his sister’s best friend and secret gossip columnist, Penelope Featherington (Coughlan).
In a recent interview with ET, Coughlan shared that both she and Newton were apprehensive about filming their romantic scenes. Having become friends while filming the first two seasons, they were nervous about the prospect of kissing each other. However, despite the awkwardness, Coughlan assures fans that their kisses, especially one in particular, will be “spicy,” and that the series will incorporate a lot of the material from the books that fans have come to expect.
“Luke and I read the books at the beginning of season 1, and it was funny to us. We were like, ‘Imagine if we have to kiss and do this.’ And then season 3 comes on and we were like, ‘Oh god,’ and then it’s like, it’s my friend. I have to kiss my friend. And you can’t pretend to kiss someone, you have to really kiss them. It’s a spicy one. It’s a lot of the stuff from the books that the fans expect has made it into the show. Oh my god, there was one day where we had to sort of do like a very romantic, beautifully written romantic scene. And we were just like peeing ourselves with laughter, ’cause you just have to, like, look into each other’s eyes and we were like, ‘Oh god.'”
Why Is Penelope and Colin’s Romance Happening Now?

While the Bridgerton series has been following the novels closely in terms of featuring different couples each season, Penelope and Colin’s romance actually takes place in book 4, Romancing Mister Bridgerton. The showrunners may have decided to skip over An Offer from a Gentleman, which details the love story of Benedict Bridgerton (played by Luke Thompson), due to the fact that Penelope and Colin’s relationship has already been developing over the course of the first two seasons, and that both actors may have wanted to leave the series before their romance was featured.
Another possible reason for the shift in focus is that book 3’s love interest, Miss Sophie Beckett, has not yet been introduced in the series. The decision to have Penelope and Colin’s story take center stage will also give the show more time to develop Benedict’s character while preparing him for a more prominent role in future seasons.

ET recently sat down with Coughlan to discuss Bridgerton season 3. She shared that she and Newton were nervous about filming their romantic scenes because they had become friends while filming the first two seasons and now “I have to kiss my friend.” However, she promises that one of their kisses in particular is “a spicy one” despite the fact that filming those moments made them laugh behind the scenes. Why Is Penelope and Colin’s Romance Happening Now?
So far, the Bridgerton series has followed the lead of the original novels as far as what couples are featured each season. However, Penelope and Colin’s romance takes place in book 4, Romancing Mister Bridgerton. This means that the series will be skipping over An Offer from a Gentlemanwhich follows the love story of Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson).
There are likely several reasons for this change. The first is that Penelope and Colin’s relationship has already had two seasons to develop, as both stars have been part of the Bridgerton cast since season 1. The showrunners may have been nervous that Coughlan and Newton would want to exit the series before the time came to feature their love story, which had already been blossoming on a slightly quicker timeline than the novels.
There is also the matter that Bridgerton has not yet introduced book 3’s love interest, Miss Sophie Beckett. It remains to be seen if she is introduced in some capacity in season 3. However, focusing on Penelope and Colin’s story will give the show time to continue developing Benedict’s character alongside their romance and prepare him for fully stepping into the spotlight.
