Burning Questions We Want Answered in the Sequel

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been receiving rave reviews as the perfect superhero sequel, drawing comparisons to the classic Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. The film not only expertly builds off the first installment but also masterfully sets up the next, making it one of the best Spider-Man films ever made. It has garnered the same kind of love from superhero fans not seen since Avengers: Endgame. However, with the introduction of countless new heroes, dimensions, and canons, along with that incredibly massive cliffhanger, we’ve got a bunch of mysteries that need solving.

One of the most significant questions that arise is whether the Canon can be safely broken. We learn that every dimension in the infinitely complex Spider-Verse has some similarities that are essential to their being, core Canon events that must occur, or the dimension dies. The film raises the question of whether the Canon can actually be saved from collapse, and if there is more to Canon events than even Spider-Man 2099 knows.

Another burning question is whether Madame Web is in Miguel’s Spider Society. The powerful telepath who spins the Web of Life and Destiny connects the various universes and is usually the one in charge of the Spider-Verse. It seems that her role has been filled by Miguel in the Spider-Verse films, though there may be a greater plan in Beyond the Spider-Verseand appear soon as a part of Miguel’s Spider Society. This could be setting up her upcoming live-action eponymous film Madame Web, which would also explain how Miguel knows how the Spider-Verse is supposed to work and what’s part of the Canon.

However, the biggest head-scratcher of Across the Spider-Verse is that many of Miles’s friends from Into the Spider-Verse are all missing. The film also raises the question of whether Miles’ dad will die, the whole reason Miles fights against the whole Society and his own friends.

The film also sets up Miles’ MCU debut, and now it’s just a matter of when. As a beloved fan-favorite, there are many who would love to see Miles team up with the other Spider-Men and the Avengers. The only way Miles could do this is if the Spider-Verse is connected to the greater Marvel multiverse, which we know it is, as Miles’ nemesis, The Spot, travels to different dimensions, including ones directly linked to the MCU.

In conclusion, Across the Spider-Verse is a masterpiece that has left fans with many unanswered questions. The film has set up a fascinating sequel, and we can’t wait to see how the story will unfold.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now hailed as the perfect superhero sequel just a month from release, drawing many justified comparisons to the classic Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Backthe famed sequel by which all sequels are judged because the latest Spidey film is simply everything one could want in a follow-up. Across the Spider-Verse not only expertly builds off the first but also masterfully sets up the next, destroying all expectations, good and bad, as one of the best Spider-Man films ever, producing the same kind of love from superhero fans not seen since Avengers: Endgame.

Of course, Across the Spider-Verse is jam-packed with such crazy awesomeness that it’s natural to be wondering a bit – probably a lot, actually. With the introduction of countless new heroes, dimensions, and canons, along with that incredibly massive cliffhanger, we’ve got a bunch of mysteries that need solving. Here are our biggest burning questions from Across the Spider-Verse that we want answered in next year’s sequel Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Can the Canon Be Safely Broken?

We learn that every incredibly different dimension in the infinitely complex Spider-Verse actually has some similarities that are essential to their being, core Canon events that must occur, or the dimension dies. In the Pavitr Prabhakar dimension of Mumbattan, we see what happens when Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) breaks the Canon to save somebody destined to die, as the entire world begins to collapse on itself. Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac) created the Spider Society precisely to prevent these reality-destroying incursions from happening by keeping the Canon intact.

Miles goes out to break the Canon of his dimension, risking everything to save his father, also doomed to die, according to Miguel. If Miles saves his dad, then his whole universe will destroy itself, with everything and everyone in it. Though, when the incursion happens in Mumbattan, a bunch of Spider-People appear trying to stop it, saying they might if they’re lucky. Which raises the question: can the Canon actually be saved from collapse? If Universe 42 never had a Spider-Man, it broke the Canon, yet it still exists and was not destroyed. It appears there is more to Canon events than even Spider-Man 2099 knows.

Is Madame Web in Miguel’s Spider Society?

Across the Spider-Verse delves deeply into the multiverse and the many different variants of Spider-Man that appear, one is noticeably absent – namely, Cassandra Webb, A.K.A. Madame Web, a powerful telepath who spins the Web of Life and Destinywhich connects the various universes, and Miguel explicitly references to Miles.

Madame Web is usually the one in charge of the Spider-Verse, and it seems that her role has been filled by Miguel in the Spider-Verse films, though there may be a greater plan in Beyond the Spider-Verseand appear soon as a part of Miguel’s Spider Society. This could be setting up her upcoming live-action eponymous film Madame Web, which would also explain how Miguel knows how the Spider-Verse is supposed to work and what’s part of the Canon while further connecting the live-action Sony Spider-Man films and the animated ones.

Where Were Miles’ Friends?

The biggest head-scratcher of Across the Spider-Verse is that many of Miles’s friends from Into the Spider-Verse are all missing. Gwen Stacy is his companion throughout the film, and Peter B. Parker appears in a minor role, though both weren’t very supportive of Miles trying to break the Canon to save his father. When Miles has to escape Miguel and the whole Spider Society chasing him down, none of his other friends even bother showing up until right before the end credits start rolling.

One explanation may that they not be members of the Spider Society, though if Spider-Cat made the cut, it’s reasonable to assume Spider-Ham and the rest did too. Peni Parker did appear, but both Spider-Ham and Spider-Man Noir were notably absent. Maybe the two were offered to be part of the Spider Society but turned down when they were told the truth about Miles. Yet both are ready to swing into action when Miles needs them. So we’re hoping for some explanation the next time we see them.

Will Miles’ Dad Die?

The whole reason Miles fights against the whole Society and his own friends is to save his dad, police officer Jefferson Davis (Brain Tyree Henry), from his terminal fate due to his promotion to captain, as outlined by Miguel. But Miles ends up trapped in the wrong dimension by an alternate variant of himself as the villain Prowler, so Jefferson seems doomed.

However, if Miles makes it back and saves his father, will the whole universe collapse and kill him anyway, fulfilling Jefferson’s destiny? Will the universe then revert because Jefferson is dead? As such an important motivation for Miles and the film, we’re desperate to know.

Alternatively, there may be a way Jefferson can survive, as Gwen’s father was also supposed to die due to his rank of a police captain, yet he resigns, and it seems that he will be okay. Can the same happen to Miles and Jefferson? Also, if Miles was never meant to be Spider-Man, does that mean that his father does not need to die?

Will Miles Join the MCU?

Across the Spider-Verse: Every Confirmed Spider-Man in the Sequel
Sony Pictures Releasing

The greatest question we’ve been asking for years is whether Miles Morales will join the MCU. Every other film iteration of Spider-Man appeared in the juggernaut MCU thanks to No Way Homeexcept Miles.

Really, Across the Spider-Verse actually sets up Miles’ MCU debut, and now it’s just of matter of when.
