Can A24 Find Success in the Animation Realm?

Hazbin Hotel, a self-produced pilot on YouTube in 2019, is set to release soon after gaining millions of views. A24, known for its eccentricity, has made this series its first foray into animation. The show’s unique concept tackles the issue of overcrowding and the annual “purge” of demons in Hell. Charlie, the bubbly princess of Hell, establishes the Hazbin Hotel, a rehabilitation center, to transform demons into peaceful angels. However, to succeed, she must overcome the all-powerful forces of Hell. Fans have been demanding an official series for years, and they have reasons to be excited.

Hazbin Hotel fits A24’s intriguing tastes and unique visuals, making it a perfect project for the studio. The series is a full-blown musical, with multiple songs strewn throughout the pilot and a dedicated single outside of it. The original pilot was produced by series creator Vivienne Medrano, utilizing crowdfunding and freelance collaborators. Although A24’s acquisition of the full series has led to minor changes, the show’s signature appeal remains intact.

The animation process is lengthy, and the pilot alone took multiple years to produce. While a four-year wait for an indeterminate number of episodes may seem long, it makes sense for a studio that has never dabbled in animation. The upside of this is that it cannot be delayed at the last minute. With the upcoming release in Summer 2023, we can rest assured that things are going smoothly behind the scenes.

Hazbin Hotel is akin to something from the Disney Renaissance in the modern day, with an adult edge. Although A24 is known for its terrifying horror films, it has never been afraid to embrace various non-horror projects in the past. Hazbin Hotel and its current spinoff series, Helluva Boss, regularly see view counts in the millions, with the original pilot sitting just short of 100 million views. The show’s massive fan base spreads the word about this vivid animated series through branded merchandise, fan-made songs, and tributes to the show’s setting.

While many questions remain unanswered, we can expect more concrete answers as we approach the summer blockbuster season. With the rumblings surrounding Hazbin Hotel slowly escalating, we can anticipate an explosive reveal that will revitalize this adult animated series in the public consciousness.

After originally debuting as a self-produced pilot on YouTube in 2019, the illusive A24 animated series Hazbin Hotel will finally release soon. In late 2020, after the pilot had been seen by millions, A24 decided to officially transform Hazbin Hotel into a full series, marking the eccentric studio’s first foray into an animated series and animation as a whole. But if you thought A24 would ever try to play it safe in a new medium, you might want to think again.

Hazbin Hotel is a unique series that tackles an unconventional concept. Down in the depths of Hell, overcrowding and the subsequent yearly “purge” of demons troubles the bubbly princess of Hell itself, Charlie. Seeking a more peaceful resolution to this issue, Charlie establishes the “Hazbin Hotel,” a rehabilitation center with the goal of turning demons into peaceful angels. But in her efforts to do so, she’ll need more than just a friendly disposition with the all-powerful forces of Hell to give her idea a shot.

Hazbin Hotel fits A24 for a variety of reasons. Looking past its unique visuals, it’s a project seemingly tailored to the intriguing tastes that A24’s television offerings appeal to.

Netflix’s BeefHulu’s framesand of course, HBO’s ever-popular Euphoria series don’t necessarily match up with typical streaming fare, and Hazbin Hotel is no different. After all, we’ve neglected to mention that the series is also a full-blown musical, with multiple songs strewn throughout the pilot, along with a dedicated single outside of it.

Hazbin Hotel‘s original pilot was produced solely through the efforts of a handful of individuals, spearheaded by series creator Vivienne Medrano. Utilizing crowdfunding and a series of freelance collaborators, Medrano was able to envision a series that is uniquely hers, free from the second-guessing of studio representatives and commercial interests. While A24’s acquisition of the full series has led to minor changesranging from voice actors to new character designs, the show’s signature appeal remains intact.

Animation is a difficult and lengthy process, after all, and the pilot alone took multiple years to produce from start to finish. While a four-year wait for an indeterminate number of episodes seems like a lot, it only makes sense for a studio that has never waded into this medium. The upside of this, thankfully, is that it’s not something you can delay at the last minute. With the upcoming release in Summer 2023, we can rest assured knowing that things are presumably going smoothly behind the scenes.

It’s refreshing to see a project akin to something from the Disney Renaissance in the modern day, albeit with more of an adult edge. While some may associate A24 with their terrifying horror films more than anything else, they’ve never been afraid to embrace plenty of non-horror projects in the past. Swiss Army Man, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and American Honey are all distinct in multiple ways, telling intriguing stories while utilizing off-color elements that would never see the light of day underneath a different studio.

A24’s acquisition of Hazbin Hotel may come off as a surprise, but make no mistake — Hazbin Hoteland its current spinoff series, Helluva Bossregularly see view counts in the millions, with the original pilot sitting just short of 100 million views as of writing. Sourcing a project from the internet for a full series isn’t a revolutionary concept, but you’d be hard-pressed to find something quite like Hazbin Hotel elsewhere.

Through a combination of colorful characters, positive LGBTQ+ representation, catchy songs, and adult humor, Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss regularly make the rounds in internet discourse not through press releases but through the devotion of its massive fan base.

Justifiably so, with little information being officially released outside of production updates and snippets of animation being posted to social media. Still, the surrounding fandom around Hazbin Hotel can be found just about anywhere, wearing branded merchandise with their favorite characters, making fan-made songs and tributes to the show’s setting, or otherwise spreading the word about this vivid animated series.

A lot is still unknown about this new series. Will it be long or short-form? Will it be exclusive to streaming? Where will it be available to watch? All these questions and more are, unfortunately, still unable to be answered. However, as we approach the summer blockbuster season, we can thankfully expect more concrete answers from the series’ ominous Summer 2023 date. Until then, expect the rumblings surrounding Hazbin Hotel to slowly escalate until the resulting explosive reveal revitalizes this adult animated series in the public consciousness.
