Captain Marvel May Not Have Forgiven Tony For Civil War II
Warning: Spoilers for The Avengers #1As Marvel’s premier team, the Avengersgets its latest revamp, Captain Marvel kicks things off with a biting commentary on both Iron Man and Thor. Marvel recently debuted its brand-new Avengers series, which naturally features a brand-new Avengers line-up. At the helm is Captain Marvel with familiar players working by her side like Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther, Vision, Scarlet Witch, and the Sam Wilson iteration of Captain America.
The Avengers #1 by Jed MacKay, C.F. Villa, Federeico Blee, VC’s Cory Petit, Carlos Lao, Martin Biro, Annalise Bissa, Tom Brevoort, and C.B. Cebulski opens with a monologue from Captain Marvel herself. She admits that everyone has their own reasons for doing things like being a superhero and tries to guess why some of her teammates do what they do. She thinks that watching the everyday “triumphs and terrors of mortals” is enough to stir something inside a god like Thor, but it’s what she has to say about Iron Man that stands out. “Tony’s past haunts him almost as much as his future does,” she says before adding that he wants to guarantee he has a positive impact on the world, a positive narrative that he can push in his favor.
Captain Marvel May Not Have Forgiven Tony For Civil War II
This is especially interesting coming from Carol, who hasn’t always had the most positive of relationships with Tony Stark. Most readers will recall that Carol and Tony literally went to war against each other at the dawn of Civil War IIwhich saw Team Captain Marvel win against Team Iron Man. While the two have let bygones be bygones enough to work with each other, Iron Man doesn’t seem to like Captain Marvel to this day, and judging by Carol’s monologue in The Avengers #1, the feeling is mutual.
The Avengers’ Co-Chairs Must Finally Reconcile
In all fairness to the character, Carol’s assertion about Tony isn’t necessarily wrong and anyone even remotely familiar with Tony Stark’s history as a character will understand that. However, it’s a somewhat negative read that doesn’t paint Tony in the best light. It especially feels negative compared to her assertion about Thor. Her explanation for Thor’s superheroism feels more like an observation without any negative connotations attached, while with Tony, she’s outright saying Tony’s inspiration is more self-centered.
While it’s not overtly aggressive, it is negative enough to consider if there is still hostility between the two following unresolved issues in the wake of Civil War II. It’s even addressed in this issue, as Carol chooses Tony as her number two in command because she didn’t like when they were on opposite sides in the past, so she wants to work directly with Tony for Avengers business. If her opening monologue isn’t a sign that there’s hostility between the two, it certainly suggests that the new chair and co-chair of the Avengers will be forced to revisit and eventually reconcile with their past since Captain Marvel and Iron Man will be working so closely with each other now.
The Avengers #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
