Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Netflix’s immensely successful Virgin River made a comeback with its fourth season premiering on the streaming platform in July 2022. Fans are now eagerly awaiting news about the show’s future and any updates on Virgin River season 5. Although there has only been a hint of a release window so far, it has been confirmed that Virgin River season 5 is currently in post-production. While the news about the upcoming season hasn’t been a flood, there have been steady updates on Virgin River season 5.

Despite Netflix’s reluctance to acknowledge it, Virgin River is undeniably one of the most popular ongoing TV shows, garnering millions of minutes of streaming and consistently topping Netflix’s charts every year. The possibility of cancellation, based on Netflix’s usual criteria, is simply illogical (although this misconception persists because the show is not promoted as heavily as other shows like The Witcher). Additionally, with a vast source material of 24 Virgin River books, there is plenty of material to explore for future seasons. Considering the relatively low production cost of Virgin River, the likelihood of multiple seasons is even higher. Let’s dive into all the latest news about Virgin River season 5.

The latest news about Virgin River season 5 is quite thrilling, as the titles of the episodes have been revealed, offering a glimpse into the story of the upcoming season. The fifth season will consist of 12 episodes, although the order of these episodes has not yet been disclosed. The titles of the episodes are as follows: “Songbird,” “Calculated Risk,” “Never Gonna Be the Same,” “A Second Chance,” “Angel’s Peak,” “Father Christmas,” “The More the Merrier,” “From the Ashes,” “Full Moon,” “Heroes Rise,” “Labor Day,” and “Trial by Fire.” Although not officially confirmed, it is expected that “Songbird,” “Calculated Risk,” and “Never Gonna Be the Same” will be episodes 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

Additional updates about Virgin River season 5 come from Martin Henderson, who plays Jack Sheridan in the show. Henderson revealed on Instagram in February 2023 that the latest season is currently in its post-production phase. This comes after a tumultuous filming schedule for Virgin River season 5, with filming being pushed back by four months, from March 2022 to July 2022. Production finally wrapped up in late November 2022, causing concerns among fans that they might have to wait longer than a year between seasons.

The most exciting news for fans is that Virgin River season 5 is confirmed and already in the works, having been announced in September 2021. Filming has already been completed, with production starting on July 18th, 2022. The delay in filming was due to Alexandra Breckenridge’s commitment to another show, This Is Us, where she plays the character Sophie. Breckenridge revealed that the filming for Virgin River season 5 was pushed back to accommodate her schedule. The official Instagram account of Virgin River also confirmed the start of production on July 18th, 2022, with a photo of the cast at a table read.

As of now, there is no specific release date for Virgin River season 5. However, the latest news does hint at a release window for the series, which is expected to premiere on Netflix in the fall of 2023. There was an error on the Netflix Tudum site in May 2023, where the release date was incorrectly stated as September 7th, 2023. Alexandra Breckenridge clarified in an Instagram story that the September 7th date was inaccurate and that the actual release date is yet to be determined.

The core cast of season 4 will be reprising their roles in Virgin River season 5. The only question mark was Steve Bacic, who played both Wes and his twin brother Vince. Since Wes died in season 4, he won’t be returning. However, it has been confirmed that Bacic will be reprising the role of Vince. The rest of the main cast, including Martin Henderson, Alexandra Breckenridge, Tim Matheson, Colin Lawrence, Benjamin Hollingsworth, and others, will continue to be a part of Virgin River season 5.

Moreover, four new actors have joined the cast in undisclosed roles. Susan Hogan, Elise Gatien, Kandyse McClure, and Paolo Maiolo have all been added to the cast of Virgin River season 5. Additionally, Netflix’s head of drama, Jinny Howe, has stated that there will be more diversity and inclusion in the upcoming seasons of Virgin River.

The conclusion of season 4 left several storylines that will set the stage for season 5. The revelation that Doc’s grandson, Denny, has Huntington’s disease will undoubtedly have a significant impact on Doc and his family. Jack’s discovery that he is the father of Mel’s baby and the truth about Charmaine’s twins will also shape their respective storylines in season 5. The identity of Jack’s shooter, revealed to be Vince, and the fate of Vince after his confrontation with Preacher will add further tension to the upcoming season.

With the episode titles being unveiled, fans can speculate about the direction of the overall story in season 5. The fire that affects the community seems to be a central plot thread, as hinted by episode titles like “Never Gonna Be The Same,” “Trial By Fire,” “From The Ashes,” and “Heroes Rise.” The anticipation for Virgin River season 5 continues to grow as fans eagerly await its release.

With the show’s continued popularity and the wealth of source material, it’s safe to say that Virgin River will continue to captivate audiences for many seasons to come.

While it was initially planned to kick off in March 2022, it was pushed back to July, starting on the 18th. As for the reason behind the delay, Alexandra Breckenridge revealed all when discussing her return as Sophie on This Is Us:

“They’ve been trying to get me to come back since I’ve been on Virgin River. We were supposed to start shooting season five of Virgin River in March, but it was pushed to July. So had we started when we were supposed to, I don’t know that Sophie and Kevin [of This Is Us] would’ve ended up together.”

On the back of that, Virgin River‘s official Instagram account revealed season 5 was taking its first steps on July 18th, 2022: “Our cast in a table read for SEASON 5.. Yes, you heard that right folks. We have now started production on SEASON 5!”

As of now, there is no Virgin River season 5 release date, much to audiences’ chagrin. However, the latest Virgin River season 5 news does at least show a release window for the series, which should premiere on Netflix in the Fall of 2023. Studios made an error back in May 2023 when the Netflix Tudum site incorrectly cited the Virgin River season 5 release date as September 7th, 2023. Actress Alexandra Breckenridge cleared up the incident in an Instagram story on May 19th, 2023, confirming that a September 7th release date was listed, but isn’t accurate. Tudum has updated the page since and Breckenridge’s full comment can be read below (via PureWow):

That’s a target date-ish, but it’s not…they don’t know. They don’t know when they’re dropping it. It would’ve come out completely different had that been the actual date, just letting you know. They don’t just drop a bomb like that. Okie dokie? Are we clear on this now?

How Virgin River Season 4 Sets Up Season 5

Virgin River season 4 Vince on CCTV

One of the biggest revelations at the end of Virgin River season 4 that should shape the Virgin River season 5 story was the shocking reveal that Doc’s grandson, Denny, has Huntington’s disease, something nobody saw coming for Virgin River season 4. Tim Matheson has already revealed to Entertainment Weekly that it’s impossible for Doc not to be impacted next season: “Most doctors feel like, ‘I could fix this.’ There’s that conflict. But what’s great is that Hope has invited Denny into their home, and he becomes a part of their home. Maybe even more than medical attention, being surrounded by that love is equally important as medical treatment for his illness.”

On top of Denny’s sad news, Jack discovered that he is the father of Mel’s baby, which should shape their story in Virgin River season 5, as will the revelation that he isn’t the father of Charmaine’s twins. The truth of Jack’s shooter was also revealed, as Vince was shown on unearthed CCTV shooting the hero. As for Vince’s future, he’s left unconscious (or worse) by Preacher at the culmination of the tense Christopher/Paige/Vince storyline. Since Steve Bacic is confirmed to return as Vince, it’s likely he survived. So, will Preacher have to continue taking responsibility for Wes’ death?

With the Virgin River season 5 news revealing the episode titles, other pieces of the overall story can be guessed. It seems like the fire that hits the community will be a multi-episode arc in season 5, with “Never Gonna Be The Same,” “Trial By Fire,” “From The Ashes,” and “Heroes Rise” possibly being related to this plot thread. “Father Christmas” suggests that Virgin River season 5 will contain a holiday-themed episode. Finally, Angel’s Peak is the title of the 9th Virgin River book and consequently an episode title, possibly giving insight into the installment’s plot.

Unfortunately, there is no Virgin River season 5 news regarding a trailer. Considering that the season is in its post-production phases, and it’s been revealed that the newest chapter will debut on Netflix in the fall of 2023, something should come out soon. Hopefully, a Virgin River season 5 trailer will drop in the summer of 2023, in turn bringing a concrete release date with it.
