David Fincher Candidly Explains Why Zodiac Movie Explored “The Graysmith Rabbit Hole” Theory

David Fincher has revealed why he chose to explore the theories of Robert Graysmith in his 2007 film Zodiac, while ignoring other possible angles on the infamous real-life murder case of the Zodiac Killer. The movie depicts the hunt for the serial murderer who terrorized Northern California in the late 1960s and was never caught. Graysmith, an editorial cartoonist who became obsessed with solving the Zodiac riddle, was the focus of the film. He went on to write a pair of books about the case.

While there were many theories he could have chosen from, Fincher chose to focus on Graysmith’s work. In a recent Tribeca Q&A, Fincher explained why he went down the Graysmith rabbit hole alone. He said, “That’s the book that we bought. We didn’t buy everyone’s book about the Zodiac. You have a responsibility to make sure that you are saying what you want to say because chances are they can deck you in an airport. So you want to be conscious and be smart about it. Making movies about things that are ripped from headlines is a slippery slope. I think it’s important to be responsible, and by the same token, you also have to entertain an audience.”

Many people criticized Fincher for only exploring Graysmith’s rabbit hole in Zodiac. However, Fincher emphasized that they bought Graysmith’s book and had a responsibility to remain faithful to it while remaining entertaining. He said, “You want to be conscious and be smart about it. Making movies about things that are ripped from headlines is a slippery slope.”

Zodiac’s Unresolved Ending Caused A Lot Of Frustration

David Fincher candidly explains why Zodiac explored the theories of Robert Graysmith while ignoring other possible angles on the film’s infamous real-life murder case. Released in 2007, Fincher’s Zodiac offered up a gripping portrayal of the hunt for the infamous Zodiac Killer, a serial murderer who terrorized Northern California in the late 1960s and was never caught. Though many theories have been put forth over the years as to the identity of the Zodiac, Fincher’s film focused largely on the efforts of author Graysmith, an editorial cartoonist who became obsessed with solving the Zodiac riddle, going on to write a pair of books about the case.

Fincher indeed had plenty of material to draw from when putting together his Zodiac movie, but ultimately chose the Graysmith rabbit hole to go down, leaving some in the audience wondering about all the other theories and potential suspects not covered in Graysmith’s books. Appearing recently at a Tribeca Q&A, Fincher addressed why Zodiac followed Graysmith alone down the rabbit hole, giving a candid explanation for the decision. Check out what he had to say in the space below (via THR):

There was so much flak after Zodiac came out about people saying, ‘Why didn’t you go down this rabbit hole? Why did you only go down the Graysmith rabbit hole?’ That’s the book that we bought. We didn’t buy everyone’s book about the Zodiac. … You have a responsibility to make sure that you are saying what you want to say because chances are they can deck you in an airport. So you want to be conscious and be smart about it. Making movies about things that are ripped from headlines is a slippery slope. I think it’s important to be responsible, and by the same token, you also have to entertain an audience.

Zodiac’s Unresolved Ending Caused A Lot Of Frustration

Graysmith’s work on the Zodiac case led him to zero in on a single suspect in the killings, a man named Arthur Leigh Allen, played in the Zodiac movie by John Carroll Lynch. But rather than definitively finger Allen as the Zodiac killer, Fincher’s film sticks to the facts, putting forth Lynch’s character as a strong suspect but not the only suspect. As a result, Zodiac ends in a very unresolved way, leaving a lot of open questions about the case. In real life, Allen died in 1992, so even if he was definitively proven to be the Zodiac Killer, he could never be brought to justice.

Fincher emphasizes in his Tribeca statements the need for remaining responsible while still entertaining an audience. While it’s true that Zodiac is incredibly entertaining as it unspools its tale of obsessive men following the trail of a mysterious killer, there’s a tremendous frustration in how everything is left hanging in the end. But that unresolved ending is indeed the only ending Fincher could have chosen, given the known facts of the Zodiac case, and his stated responsibility to stay true to those facts.

Zodiac would likely be a more satisfying movie, if only Fincher were less rigorous in observing the need to be smart when dealing with real-life cases. A lesser filmmaker might have given in to temptation and wrapped everything up with a nice, neat bow, giving audiences the closure they wanted, even at the expense of truth. But that filmmaker would also have strayed from the facts, something Fincher is clearly unwilling to do.
