Demi Lovato reflects on overcoming ‘daddy issues’ after dating older men
Demi Lovato has opened up about her thriving relationship with her boyfriend, Jordan Lutes, and how she has overcome her “daddy issues.” During an interview on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show,” the singer, known for her hit “Sorry Not Sorry,” expressed her distaste for her past relationships with older men, describing them as “gross.” Lovato, who is now 31, previously dated Wilmer Valderrama, despite their 13-year age gap. However, she now feels confident that her issues with her father are no longer affecting her.
Reflecting on her current relationship with Lutes, who is also 32, Lovato spoke fondly about their strong bond. She emphasized the importance of feeling safe and having constant laughter in a relationship, and she believes she has found that with Lutes. Lovato even shared her hope of getting married and starting a family with him.
The couple first connected while working on new music together last year. Lovato was immediately attracted to Lutes, a Canadian artist who co-wrote multiple songs on her album “Holy Fvck.” She couldn’t help but express her admiration for him to her friends, noting how attractive he was.
Prior to her relationship with Lutes, Lovato had been involved with older men, including Valderrama, whom she started dating in 2010. The couple had an on-again, off-again relationship for six years, beginning when Lovato was just 17 and Valderrama was 29. Looking back, Lovato now finds the idea of dating older men “gross” and warns young girls against it.
In fact, Lovato released a song called “29” about six years after her breakup with Valderrama, leading fans to speculate that it was about him. While she never confirmed the rumors, she did use the opportunity to caution young girls about the dangers of dating older men before they reach the legal age of consent.
Despite her past experiences, Lovato remains hopeful about her future with Lutes. She believes in the importance of being honest with the public, which is why she released her recent single. Lovato sees the message behind her music as significant and hopes it resonates with others.
In addition to Valderrama, Lovato has been romantically linked to MMA fighters Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos and Luke Rockhold. She was also briefly engaged to Max Ehrich in July 2020, but the relationship ended a few months later.

“I think there’s a few signs to that. I’m with a partner that is my age, essentially. I look back on the past [of dating older men] and think ‘that’s gross.’”
Lovato also gushed about her “healthy” relationship with Lutes, 32, and her hope to one day tie the knot and have kids with the fellow musician.
