Demon Slayer is Practically Begging for Its Own MMORPG

The Demon Slayer anime recently concluded its adaptation of the ninth arc of the Manga, Swordsmith Village, leaving fans eager for more. The Demon Slayer Manga wrapped up in 2020, and the only video game adaptation, Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles, was released almost two years ago. With the passage of time and the release of subsequent seasons, many fans believe that Demon Slayer is overdue for another video game adaptation. While The Hinokami Chronicles was a fighting game similar to Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm, its expansive map and intricate mythology set the stage for a game on a much grander scale. The world of Demon Slayer is ripe for an MMORPG.

Demon Slayer follows the story of Tanjiro Kamado, a young man thrust into the grim reality of demon hunting. After the death of his family and the transformation of his sister, Nezuko, into a demon, Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps. This elite organization protects the world from demons, although most of humanity is unaware of their existence. The leader of the Demon Slayer Corps is Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and its most powerful members, the Hashira, serve as the primary force. On the other side, the demons are led by Muzan Kibutsuji, with his Twelve Kizuki acting as the main antagonists in the Manga and Anime.

The rich mythos of Demon Slayer makes it a perfect candidate for an MMORPG adaptation. The Demon Slayer Corps itself consists of ten basic ranks, which could be translated into prestige levels or experience-based ranks in the game. Special ranks like Tsuguko and Hashira are reserved for a select few and could serve as quest-giving NPCs or allies in the game. Each Demon Slayer possesses a unique “Breathing Technique” that allows them to unleash powerful attacks based on specific core characteristics or elemental factors. The demons in Demon Slayer also have their own ranks, with the Twelve Kizuki divided into upper and lower factions. Like the members of the Demon Slayer Corps, demons possess unique and formidable abilities called Blood Demon Arts. However, demons must attain a certain level of strength to wield such skills, which could be used in an MMORPG to distinguish elite enemies from common ones found in the game’s open world or early areas. The Twelve Kizuki themselves could be the most challenging raid bosses in an MMORPG, but a Hashira would need to be present to make the encounter plausible in the game’s universe. Even then, defeating one of the Twelve Kizuki would not necessarily mean the end of that particular enemy, as they are rarely vanquished.

The world of Demon Slayer features a wide range of unique locations, many of which serve as the backdrop for specific story arcs in the series. An MMORPG based on the anime could be divided into distinct narrative regions, starting with the Demon Slayer Corps’ Final Exam location, Mount Fujikasane, which could serve as the game’s prologue and tutorial area. The game’s missions could revolve around Demon Slayer Corps assignments, which would take players to different regions and cities, while major battles from the anime could serve as raid locations. Minor story arcs, such as the Mugen Train, could be released as seasonal or expansion content following the initial launch of the base game. The world of Demon Slayer is perfectly suited for an MMORPG. Its rich mythology and diverse locations can be seamlessly integrated into RPG mechanics, and the importance of these settings to the battles and ranks calls for cooperative play.

Currently, there has been no announcement of a new video game adaptation for Demon Slayer. However, fans eagerly await a title that can effectively capture the complexity and depth that Demon Slayer offers. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Demon Slayer’s Mythos Is Perfect for an MMORPG Adaptation

Demon Slayer Hashira

The Demon Slayer property is prime for an MMORPG adaptation, as its mythos includes a variety of ranks, styles, techniques, and unique abilities. The Demon Slayer Corp itself includes 10 basic ranks, which could be translated into prestige levels or experience-derived ranks in-game. While some special ranks, such as Tsuguko and Hashira, exist beyond the base 10, they are reserved for. a chosen few, who could act as quest-giving NPCs or allies in-game. Each Demon Slayer can use a unique “Breathing Technique” which allows them to utilize unique attacks based on certain core characteristics or elemental factors.

Demon Slayer‘s Demons also feature ranks, as the 12 Kizuki are divided into upper and lower factions, based on the numbers one through twelve. Much like members of the Demon Slayer Corp, Demons wield unique and powerful abilities called Blood Demon Arts. However, Demons must reach a certain level of strength to possess such as skill, which could be used in an MMORPG to distinguish elite enemies from those commonly encountered across a game’s open world or early locations. The 12 Kizuki themselves could appear as an MMORPG’s strongest raid bosses, but a Hashira would have to be there to make the clash conceivable in-universe. Even then, 12 Kizuki are so rarely defeated that besting one in-game would likely not spell the end of that given enemy.
