Drax Explains Why Star-Lord Will Never Be Happy

Warning: Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #2Star-Lord, the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, has one character flaw that prevents him from being content. Even as they roam the galaxy with a new, edgier attitude, Drax the Destroyer sees right through his problem. The rebooted Guardians of the Galaxy series portrays the team with a more anti-hero approach to their adventures and new costumes.

Star-Lord is determined to take a more heroic route towards life, even in the midst of chaos. In Guardians of the Galaxy #2 by Jackson Lanzig, Collin Kelly, and Kev Walker, Quill disapproves of Gamora and Nebula deviating from his original plan, even if it leads to favorable results, because it ends with thievery. Drax tells Quill, “You keep searching for nobility in a chaotic universe. But you will only find your vulnerable eyes gouged out and left for the bone vultures.” In other words, a hero cannot remain pure in a chaotic universe without being either corrupted or destroyed.

The Guardians of the Galaxy have suffered some great losses, and the hole left by Groot’s departure from the team and new status as the villain known as Grootfall has made them more cynical than ever. This could also explain why Quill is so dead set on nobility, especially considering that it’s brought up in the same series of panels. In the same issue, another friend of Star-Lord’s turns out to be a “genocidal psychopath,” as Nebula puts it.

Star-Lord’s Problem is Common in the Marvel Universe

Warning: Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #2There is one character trait that keeps Star-Lord from being truly happy, either on his own or with the Guardians of the Galaxyand Drax the Destroyer sees right through his problem. The latest iteration of the rebooted Guardians of the Galaxy series has seen the Guardians roaming the galaxy with a new, edgier attitude. The first issue established the Guardians of the Galaxy’s new edge (as well as new costumes) by having them sport more of an anti-hero approach to their adventures.

However, if anyone is still determined to take a more heroic route towards life, it’s Star-Lord. At least he certainly seems to long for heroism in Guardians of the Galaxy #2 by Jackson Lanzig, Collin Kelly, and Kev Walker. Quill disapproves of Gamora and Nebula deviating from his original plan, even if it gives them favorable results, because it ends with thievery, like their good old days. Drax neutralizes the situation by telling Quill, “You keep searching for nobility in a chaotic universe. But you will only find your vulnerable eyes gouged out and left for the bone vultures.” In short, a hero cannot remain pure in a chaotic universe, not without either being corrupted or destroyed.

The Guardians of the Galaxy have suffered some great losses as of late. In fact, they’ve been bigger than usual, if only because of the hole left by Groot’s departure from the team and new status as the villain known as Grootfall. That could also explain a major reason why Quill is so dead set on nobility, especially considering that it’s brought up in the same series of panels. In the same issue, another friend of Star-Lord’s turns out to be a “genocidal psychopath,” as Nebula puts it.

And yet, Star-Lord’s efforts are misguided, and perhaps the same can be said for most Marvel heroes. There are so many heroes within this universe who try their best to remain pure and noble in a world filled with chaos, pain, and anguish. Most of these heroes end up either corrupted by the world around them, or completely depressed from it. Spider-Man is a good example of someone driven to grief, but he also had a dark phase after dealing with darkness for so long. The same can be said for Daredevil, who is coming out of his own dark phase now.

The examples run high, but this is all especially true for Quill. Most heroes feel the weight of the world on their shoulders while trying to save it, but for Quill, it’s an entire galaxy that he’s trying to save. Dealing with Groot’s villain turn was enough to turn the Guardians of the Galaxy into anti-heroes, but resisting their new attitude is stopping Star-Lord from being truly happy, as Drax points out.

Guardians of the Galaxy #2 is available now from Marvel Comics.
