Evil Dead Rise Director On Potential Return & Other Directors Taking Over

Lee Cronin, the second new filmmaker to helm the Evil Dead franchise after creator Sam Raimi, is confident about the future of the franchise after Evil Dead Rise. The movie acts as a standalone expansion of the horror franchise, following a family living in a dilapidated Los Angeles apartment who inadvertently unearth a version of the Naturom Demonto and unleash the Deadite evil. With the best reviews for an Evil Dead movie in over 30 years, attention has now turned towards the potential future of the franchise.

During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant about the home release of Evil Dead Rise, Lee Cronin discussed his potential return to direct the Evil Dead franchise. He stated that he and the creatives behind the franchise are not looking to rush a follow-up, but the right people are happy with the success of the new movie, and he feels he has opened the door for other directors to join alongside him. Check out what Cronin shared below:

“Yeah, I think the potential is absolutely there for that to take place. I think we are right now enjoying the success of this movie. I think it’s important that you don’t just absolutely try and rinse something out immediately. It’s something that’s always been under discussion, because there’s fun to that, as we were talking and developing the movie, Rob Tapert, who would have been on set when I was shooting, we’d often talk about some different ideas in terms of what can actually take place. I think one of the things I’ve maybe done with Evil Dead Rise, though, as well is open it up further, potentially, to other voices to come in. I think I broke the universe open a little wider than maybe it’s been before, and I think there’s a lot of potential there, especially now clarifying that existence of three books. That’s not just a fun moment in Army of Darkness, it’s actually part of the lore, it’s now part of the mythos, and starts to broaden the canon as such. So, yeah, I’m a huge fan of it, they’re really fun, terrifying and challenging movies to make, and as a filmmaker, you want to be challenged. So, there’s definitely thoughts and ideas that that are circling, and things that we’ve discussed, and in terms of when and how that happens, that’s up to the film gods.”

How Evil Dead Rise Set Up Multiple Sequels

In the months since the movie’s release, Cronin has teased a variety of ideas for a potential Evil Dead Rise sequel. One idea is a prequel focused on the Book of the Dead, centered on a John Wick-like priest facing hordes of Deadites. Another is a direct story following Kassie and Beth after surviving the events of the movie. Fans of the franchise have shown much enthusiasm for the former concept, feeling it could reinvent the series while also returning to some of its goofy roots.

Another potential path for the Evil Dead franchise’s future is a return to the woods, as set up with Evil Dead Rise‘s opening and closing segments of young adult Jessica killing her friend and cousin at a lakeside cabin. As Cronin notes, multiple books now are confirmed to exist in the world, making it possible to go back to the franchise’s roots of isolated woodland stories, or continue exploring new ground akin to Evil Dead Rise‘s apartment building.

Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams may also make a return to the franchise, especially after his sneaky cameo teasing his Deadite-slaying hero having been displaced at another point in time after the medieval-centric Army of Darkness. Campbell himself has downplayed the possibility of portraying Ash in a live-action format in the future, save for a new movie helmed by Sam Raimi, while instead being interested in an Ash vs. Evil Dead animated show.
