Fat Joe shows 200-pound weight loss, says he pushed ‘forward’ after depression

He’s Joe, formerly known as Fat Joe.

Rapper Joe shared the story of his incredible weight loss of 200 pounds, attributing his success to overcoming depression.

In an interview with Men’s Health, the 52-year-old hitmaker of “All The Way Up” revealed that he made a decision to transform his lifestyle when he reached his highest weight of 470 pounds.

Joe explained that he had to motivate himself to get back on track after experiencing depression following the death of his close friend Big Pun in 2000.

“I attended his funeral and felt like Ebenezer Scrooge. I saw myself in him,” Joe shared. “I looked at his young daughter, who was the same age as my own daughter, and said, ‘You need to lose weight, or else you won’t be around anymore.'”

The rapper, whose real name is Joseph Antonio Cartagena, began to educate himself about healthy habits.

“Your body is like a computer,” he explained. “It processes the food you eat in different ways.”

According to Joe, his mind is “the most complex Rubik’s Cube you could ever try to solve,” which became evident during his battle with depression.

He compared his mental state at the time to a scene in “The Matrix Resurrections” where Keanu Reeves’ character Neo sits in a bathtub with a rubber duck on his head.

“That’s what depression felt like to me,” he said. “When you’re fighting against yourself, there is no wall high enough to build, and there is no escape.”

“There is no place you can go where you can escape it because you are battling your own mind. You wake up, and as soon as you think about it, your brain sends you a message saying, ‘We are not meant to be happy.’ And then you fall right back into depression,” he added.

Despite his significant weight loss, the rapper previously stated to TheFantasyTimes that he has no plans to change his stage name.

“As a business, I have invested millions and millions of dollars in promoting the name Fat Joe, so it wouldn’t be wise to change it now,” he revealed in October 2022.

Rapper Fat Joe detailed his impressive 200-pound weight loss, saying he pushed “forward” after a battle with depression.

The “All The Way Up” hitmaker, 52, told Men’s Health that he decided to overhaul his lifestyle when he weighed his heaviest at 470 pounds.

The rapper said he had to have a pep talk with himself to get back on track when he became depressed following the death of his best friend Big Pun in 2000.

“I went to his funeral and I felt like Ebenezer Scrooge. Like, I seen me,” he shared. “And I’m looking at his little daughter. She was the same age as my daughter. I said, ‘You gotta lose weight; otherwise you outta here.’”
