Goldie Hawn reveals why she and Kurt Russell never married after 40 years of dating
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have an extraordinary love story, but their decision to never formalize their union has often been seen as unconventional.
The Academy Award-winning actress, 77, recently discussed her relationship with her long-term partner and the reason they never exchanged vows.
“Why should we? Isn’t that a more important question?” Hawn responded to CNN’s Chris Wallace.
When pressed further, Hawn, who has been with Russell, 72, since 1984, explained that both of them have witnessed the aftermath of unsuccessful marriages.
“When it doesn’t work out, it becomes a big mess,” Hawn explained. She had previously been married to actor Gus Trikonis from 1969 to 1976 and musician Bill Hudson from 1976 to 1982.
“It’s always messy,” she shared. “Someone has to look and ask, ‘How many divorces are actually enjoyable? How many divorces are not financially draining? How many divorces make you hate the person even more? How many divorces harm children?'”
Wallace then acknowledged that Hawn and Russell have been together for four decades, stating, “You’re not going to divorce each other.”
“How did you know that then?” Hawn responded. “I like the idea that I can wake up in the morning and decide every day if I want to be here.”
“Relationships are hard,” she continued. “They’re not always easy. We face various obstacles. We have beliefs and disagreements.”
“So, I believe it’s important to remain independent and have independent thinking, so you can maintain your individuality and have that sense,” she added.

Despite never getting married, Hawn and Russell welcomed their son, Wyatt Russell, in 1986.
The actress from “Private Benjamin” is also the mother of actors Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, who refer to Russell as “pa.”
On the other hand, Russell was previously married to actress Season Hubley from 1979 to 1983, and they have a son named Boston together.

“I mean relationships are hard,” she went on. “They’re not always easy. There’s all kinds of hurdles we go through. There’s things that we believe in, things we don’t believe in, we agree on.”
“So I think ultimately staying independent with independent thinking is important, so you can hold on to yourself, and you can actually have that feeling,” she added.
