Green Lantern’s New Construct Is Perfect Next Step in His Feud with Batman
Caution: Spoilers for Green Lantern #2
The ongoing feud between Green Lantern and Batman continues to escalate thanks to Hal Jordan’s innovative creation. While Hal may never truly become the Dark Knight, he certainly knows how to emulate his persona. In the video of the day, we delve into the Secret Invasion and witness how the Blip has profoundly affected Nick Fury. Actor Samuel L. Jackson provides insight into Fury’s readiness and the extent of change caused by the Blip.
In Green Lantern #2 by Jeremy Adams, Xermánico, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Dave Sharpe, Hal Jordan takes a page out of Batman’s playbook. During a “test flight” around town, Hal stumbles upon a gang of construction-themed criminals known as the “Demolition Team” desecrating a graveyard. It becomes immediately apparent that they have malicious intentions. Instead of launching a direct attack, Hal draws inspiration from Batman’s tactics of exploiting fear and superstition to intimidate wrongdoers. Utilizing his newfound power ring, Green Lantern employs this strategy.
Quoting one of Batman’s most iconic lines, “Criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot,” Green Lantern confronts the Demolition Team. However, rather than engaging them directly, Hal creates a massive construct composed of eerie green apparitions. The criminals inadvertently run into the authorities, while Hal taunts them, declaring, “I am vengeance! I am the niiiiiiight!”
It is worth noting that Green Lantern and Batman have a complex history. Despite being colleagues and teammates in the Justice League, they have often clashed due to their contrasting personalities. However, recent events, such as the disbanding of the Justice League and the upheaval within the Green Lantern Corps, have possibly fostered a newfound appreciation within Hal for Batman’s strategies. These changes have resulted in Hal being grounded on Earth.
Nonetheless, Hal Jordan’s resilience knows no bounds. The issue commences with him testing a self-created power ring, crafted from pure willpower and the remnants of Oan energy. Green Lanterns are renowned for their resourcefulness, so it is not entirely surprising that Hal has fashioned his own personalized power ring. Nevertheless, witnessing Hal draw inspiration from Batman’s playbook and implementing fear-based tactics, which deviates from his usual confrontational approach, is a treat for readers. Xermánico’s artwork and Fajardo’s colors bring this unique spin on Batman’s strategy to life, while also paying homage to the playful rivalry between the two heroes.
Looking ahead, Green Lantern’s massive spectral construct serves as a sneak peek into the character’s forthcoming harrowing adventure in Knight Terrors: Green Lantern, set to take place this summer. The Knight Terrors event promises a season of horror for the DC Universe, but before that unfolds, Green Lantern takes pleasure in instilling fear inspired by Batman into low-level criminals. Grab a copy of Green Lantern #2, now available from DC Comics, to witness this thrilling installment.
Warning: SPOILERS for Green Lantern #2Green Lantern and Batman‘s long-running feud continues thanks to Hal Jordan’s new construct. Hal will never be the real Dark Knight, but he sure knows how to play the part.
Green Lantern Hal Jordan takes a major play out of Batman’s playbook in Green Lantern #2 by Jeremy Adams, Xermánico, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Dave Sharpe. On a “test flight” around town, Hal comes across a crew of construction-themed goons called the “Demolition Team” infiltrating a graveyard, and they’re obviously up to no good. Instead of ambushing them, the setting immediately makes him think of Batman’s favorite strategy: using fear and superstition against criminals. And, using his new power ring, Green Lantern does just that.
After quoting one of the most iconic Batman lines of all time — “What is it that Bruce always said… Criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot” — Green Lantern corners the Demolition Team. But instead of confronting them head-on, Hal uses his ring to create a massive construct made of spooky green ghosts. The goons run directly into the police as Hal calls after them: “I am vengeance! I am the niiiiiiight!“
Green Lantern Knows When Batman Is Right
Green Lantern and Batman have a long history with each other; though they’re Justice League colleagues and teammates, they have often been at odds in the past, especially given the differences in their temperaments. But perhaps time and distance have made Hal Jordan more willing to appreciate Batman’s strategies, considering the recent disbanding of the Justice League — not to mention the massive shake-ups with the Green Lantern Corps status quo, which includes Hal being grounded on Earth. However, nothing keeps Hal Jordan down for long, and this issue opens with him testing out a new power ring that he formed himself out of pure willpower and the remnants of Oan energy.
Green Lanterns are known for being resourceful — it’s no surprise that Hal has managed to create his own personal power ring — but it’s still surprising to see Hal of all people quoting from and relying on Batman’s playbook. Batman often utilizes fear and even manufactured chaos to corral his “suspicious and cowardly lot.” Green Lantern, on the other hand, tends to confront his threats head-on. Not only is Hal’s spin on Batman’s famous strategy a sight to see thanks to Xermánico’s art and Fajardo’s colors, it’s also a nice nod to the heroes’ playful rivalry.
What’s Next for Green Lantern?
Beyond even that, Green Lantern’s massive spectral construct serves as an underhanded prologue to the character’s next terrifying adventure, which takes place in Knight Terrors: Green Lantern this summer. The Knight Terrors event promises a season of horror for the DC Universe, but that doesn’t mean Green Lantern can’t put the fear of Batman into some low-level goons first.
