How The Star Wars KOTOR Remake Could Highlight the Importance of the Jedi Code

Star Wars fans consider the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic to be one of the best Star Wars games ever made. However, many aspects of the game could be updated in the planned remake. The remake could highlight parts of the story in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic that were left as background details. In the Star Wars universe, the Jedi Code is frequently mentioned by the characters. Depending on who is asked, the Code is either meant to be guidelines on how to be a good Jedi or a firm set of rules. While mentioned throughout the films, the Code itself isn’t revealed to the audiences and is mentioned for the first time in full in the game. Given the story of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the planned remake could highlight the importance of the code in a way the original could not.

The story of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a classic game that is both straightforward and complicated. Players control a soldier in the Old Republic who happens to be force sensitive. The player character is eventually taken to the Jedi Academy on Dantooine where they are trained in the ways of the Force. It is here that Star Wars fans first heard the Jedi Code in full. On Dantooine, players must go around the area and pick up bits of the Jedi Code from various non-player characters. In order to complete the area and move on, they have to memorize the entire code and recite it to one of the Masters. Later on, players will encounter the opposite version of this in the form of the Sith Code. However, once players get past Dantooine, there is little need for them to abide by it in any way. This is something that the planned remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic could, in theory, fix.

Since it was first announced, the KOTOR remake has had something of a troubled production. Last year, the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic reportedly switched developers, and one of the reasons that was cited was to make the game more cinematic. If true, the Jedi Code portions could benefit the most from this shift in focus. In the original version of the game, The Jedi Code doesn’t factor into the main story as much as one might think. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is full of many wonderful characters, yet the various Jedi characters players will encounter don’t really give them a hard time over the Jedi Code. This is something the remake can and should fix.

In the end, it’s impossible to say for sure what would and wouldn’t be good for the remake. As of writing, Embracer Group’s CEO has no comment when it comes to the Knights of the Old Republic remake, so there is no guarantee that it will even happen. However, for the ways the Jedi Code was highlighted in the original game, it’s also made clear that the Jedi Order was a somewhat flawed institution full of people who are a bit too arrogant for their own good. Having the game hammer this philosophy home endlessly just might undo that otherwise critical plot point, or drive it further home. Either way, the remake would benefit from highlighting it just a bit more.

How The Remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Can Put the Jedi Code to Better Use

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is full of many wonderful characters yet the various Jedi characters players will encounter don’t really give them a hard time over the Jedi Code. Characters like Bastila, Jolee, and Juhani, for example, will berate you for being cruel but don’t exactly cite the Jedi Code for guidance. This is especially odd, considering the game’s big twist regarding the protagonist and the fact that the player character is the one who brings Jolee back from the brink of the Dark Side. This is something the remake can and should fix.

In the end, it’s impossible to say for sure what would and wouldn’t be good for the remake. As of writing, Embracer Group’s CEO has no comment when it comes to the Knights of the Old Republic remake, so there is no guarantee that it will even happen.
