How To Beat Demon King Ganondorf

**This article is packed with major spoilers for the thrilling conclusion of The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom!** The highly anticipated game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, is finally here, bringing back one of Zelda’s most iconic villains, Ganondorf, the King of Evil. Ganondorf makes a triumphant return by overpowering Link in the game’s opening cutscene, shattering the Master Sword and leaving Link weakened. After embarking on a journey across Hyrule to save the lands from strange phenomena and strengthen himself, Link, accompanied by the five Sages, returns to the Depths beneath Hyrule Castle to face the Demon King once and for all.

The encounter with Ganondorf in the Depths is an arduous and lengthy battle, so having some helpful tips can greatly sway the fate of Hyrule in your favor. Check out our guide on how to restore health lost by Gloom in The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom for more information.

Venturing into the Depths beneath Hyrule Castle will lead you through a brief dungeon before reaching Ganon’s lair. Along the way, you’ll encounter Silver enemies, the most powerful tier of enemies introduced in Breath of the Wild. These may be the first Silver enemies you’ve encountered thus far in the game, so it’s crucial to prepare enough food and elixirs. Make sure to gather Sundelions from Sky Islands and cook them into food, as they have the ability to heal hearts affected by Gloom. The dungeon is filled with Gloom, so being properly prepared is essential.

The underground tunnels will eventually bring you back to the Imprisoning Chamber where the game began. From there, take the plunge into Gloom’s Lair and face Ganondorf once and for all.

Updated by Devin Amlen on June 30, 2023: In order to help you better prepare for the climactic battle with Ganondorf, we have added additional information to this article. You will find a comprehensive list of Ganondorf’s attacks, which you can refer to for preparation or if you aim for a hitless run. Additionally, we have highlighted some useful extra information.

War In The Depths Of Hyrule

Your first encounter in Gloom’s Lair will be with a massive army of monsters summoned by the Demon King. You’ll have to fight through multiple waves of monsters before facing Ganondorf, but fear not, as you won’t be alone! The five Sages – Sidon, Tulin, Yunobo, Riju, and Mineru – will join you in the fight. The waves of monsters include Boko blinds, Lizalfos, Gibdos, and Moblins. Although these are standard rank-and-file monsters, don’t underestimate their danger. All of the monsters in the Demon King’s Army are infused with Gloom, which will drain your max health with each hit. The fight can become chaotic, especially if the enemies gang up on you. Stay determined, work alongside the Sages, and defeat the Demon King’s Army. After this segment, take a moment to gather your thoughts and prepare food for the upcoming battle. We recommend cooking Sundelion-infused food to counter the effects of Gloom. Make sure to defeat any remaining dungeon bosses before proceeding.

The Menace Unleashed

Here it is – the climactic battle with Ganondorf begins in the Depths beneath Hyrule Castle. The first part of the battle is a duel between Ganon and Link. If you’ve encountered Phantom Ganon prior to this fight, you’ll notice some similarities in Ganondorf’s fighting style. He wields multiple weapons and has attack patterns similar to Phantom Ganon. However, Ganondorf is far more formidable than his pawn. He has unique attacks that require precise dodging, such as a downward strike that creates an updraft. Deploy your paraglider quickly to dodge the wave of Gloom unleashed by his attack, as it covers the entire arena. Beware, attacking Ganondorf recklessly will result in him perfectly dodging your attacks, a skill not seen in any previous enemy encountered by Link. But don’t fret, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to respond with a flurry rush of your own.

After depleting Ganondorf’s health bar, he powers up and transforms into his Demon King form, restoring his health and more. Don’t be intimidated by his massive health bar, as the five Sages will come to your aid. In response, Ganondorf summons five duplicates of himself, but it’s crucial to focus on the real Ganondorf. The Sages will keep the clones occupied. There aren’t many changes in this phase of the fight, except for a change in appearance. The real challenge begins when half of Ganondorf’s health has been depleted. He will now perfectly dodge your melee attacks and flurry rushes. You’ll need precise timing to counter his flurry rush with your own, or you can opt to shoot him with your bow. Ganondorf will also unleash new attacks involving Gloom, the most challenging of which is his Spear attack. He fires homing projectiles while charging at you. Deflect them with your shield or strike them with your sword, as they will relentlessly chase you and hit you while Ganondorf attacks with his spear. The rest of Ganondorf’s new attacks send waves of Gloom across the arena, which may seem daunting but are easier to deal with compared to his Spear attack. Be brave, maintain the pressure, and defeat the Demon King once and for all.

Draconified Demon King

Similar to the climactic finale of Breath of the Wild, Ganon takes on a bestial form to defeat Link once and for all. This time, however, Ganondorf transforms into a monstrous Demon Dragon by consuming his Secret Stone and mastering the forbidden art of draconification. The Demon Dragon is a formidable opponent, but you’ll have your own draconic ally in this fight – the Light Dragon, the draconified form of Princess Zelda herself. Despite being easier than the previous battle against Ganondorf, this fight is a spectacle to behold. Ride on the Light Dragon to gain a strategic advantage and strike at the Demon Dragon’s weak points, which are clusters of glowing demonic eyes. Destroying each weak point will cause Ganon to buck you off, but fear not, as the Light Dragon will swoop in to catch you, allowing you to continue the cycle until the Demon Dragon is defeated.

Know Your Attacks

Ganondorf is a skilled warrior who is proficient in using various types of weapons, including One-Handed, Two-Handed, Spear, and Bow. Familiarize yourself with the following list of attacks to ensure that the Demon King doesn’t catch you off guard. As a general rule, avoid staying too close to Ganondorf during the fight, as certain attacks, like his charged attacks, will have a reduced charge time and automatically hit if you’re in close proximity. If you’re having difficulties fighting Ganondorf, utilize your bow; he can dodge your melee attacks but not ranged ones.

One-Handed Attacks:
– Standing Slash: Ganondorf performs a vertical sword slash. Look out for the telltale extension of his sword before he strikes. Dodge sideways to evade this attack.
– Running Slash: Ganondorf charges towards Link and delivers a horizontal sword slash. Dodge backwards to avoid it.

Two-Handed Attacks:
– Spin Attack: Ganondorf spins around with his two-handed weapon, hitting in a wide radius. Keep your distance or dodge to the side to evade this attack.

Spear Attack:
– Ganondorf fires three homing projectiles while charging at you. You can deflect them with your shield or strike them with your sword to neutralize their threat.

Bow Attack:
– Ganondorf can shoot arrows from his bow. Keep an eye out for his aim and dodge accordingly.

By mastering these attacks and staying alert, you’ll have a better chance of emerging victorious against Ganondorf. Good luck, and may the fate of Hyrule be in your favor!

Diving into the Depths beneath Hyrule Castle will have you enter a brief dungeon leading up to Ganon’s lair. The lead-up to Ganon’s lair includes encounters with Silver enemies, the strongest tier of enemy as introduced in Breath of the Wild. These may be the first Silver enemies you encounter up until this point in the game, so make sure to prepare adequate food and elixirs. In particular, gather Sundelions from Sky Islands and cook them into food; Sundelions have the power to heal hearts claimed by Gloom, and the large amounts of Gloom permeating the dungeon will no doubt be a problem without the proper preparations. The underground tunnels will eventually lead you back to the Imprisoning Chamber from the start of the game. After reaching the precipice of Gloom’s Lair, take the dive to challenge Ganondorf once and for all.

The Menace Unleashed

Here it is – the climactic battle with Ganondorf begins in the Depths beneath Hyrule Castle. The first part of the battle is a duel between Ganon and Link – if you’ve encountered Phantom Ganon prior to fighting Ganondorf, you’ll notice several similarities. Ganondorf fights very similarly to Phantom Ganon, boasting multiple weapons he can switch between on the fly and having nearly identical attack patterns. However, Phantom Ganon is but a pale imitation of the man himself, as Ganondorf has more than enough to distinguish himself from his demonic pawn.

Ganondorf has unique attacks that will demand you dodge; in particular, Ganondorf will charge up a downward strike, creating an updraft. Quickly deploy your paraglider to dodge the wave of gloom that erupts from Ganondorf’s attack, as it covers the entire arena. One thing to note with Ganondorf is that attacking him wildly will cause him to perfect dodge your attackssomething not seen before by any foe Link has encountered. This may sound scary, but don’t worry, you’ll have more than enough time to be able to respond with a flurry rush of your own.

Master Of The Secret Stone (2nd Phase)

After emptying Ganondorf’s health bar, Ganondorf powers up and enters his Demon King form, restoring his health and then some. Don’t be intimidated by the massive health bar, as the five Sages will arrive to back you up. In kind, Ganondorf will answer with five duplicates of himself – make sure to focus on the real deal. The Sages will keep the clones busy. There aren’t many changes in this fight from the previous one, besides a new coat of paint – the real changes come when half of his health has been deducted. Once this happens, Ganondorf will absorb his clones and knock out the sages, bringing the fight back to a one-on-one. This is where the difficulty turns up to eleven.

Ganondorf will now always perfect dodge your melee attacks, and even perfect dodge your flurry rushes. You’ll need keen instincts and timing to answer his flurry rush with your own, second one – that, or take pot shots at him with your bow. Ganondorf will also gain new attacks involving Gloom; the hardest of which is his Spear attack. Ganondorf will fire three homing projectiles that will chase you around as Ganondorf charges up a charging attack. You can deflect these projectiles with your shield, or hit them with your sword, otherwise they will constantly chase you and inevitably hit you as Ganondorf mows you down with his spear. The rest of Ganondorf’s new attacks send waves of Gloom across the arena, and may seem scary, but are much easier to deal with than his Spear’s attack. Be courageous, and keep up the pressure until you take down the Demon King once and for all.

Draconified Demon King

Much like the finale of Breath of the Wild, Ganon puts everything on the line and takes on a bestial form to take down Link once and for all. This time, however, Ganondorf transforms into a monstrous Demon Dragon by swallowing his Secret Stone, undergoing the forbidden art of draconification. The Demon Dragon is a formiddable foe, but you have your own draconic ally for this fight – the Light Dragon, the draconified form of Princess Zelda herself.

This fight is much easier than the previous battle against Ganondorf, but don’t let that take away from the fight’s sheer spectacle. Ride on the Light Dragon to gain a good vantage point to mount the Demon Dragon and strike at its weakpoints, masses of glowing demonic eyes. Destroying each weakpoint will cause Ganon to buck you off, wherein the Light Dragon will swoop in to catch you, repeating the cycle until the Demon Dragon is felled once and for all.

  • Triple Shot: Ganondorf will fire three Gloom-infused arrows at you. In his third phase, Ganondorf will encircle Link with a shrinking circle of Gloom projectiles before firing his bow. Use your sword to deflect these projectiles back at Ganondorf.
