Indiana Jones 5 Director Grilled Harrison Ford For Star Wars Secrets On Their Last Movie

As James Mangold, the director for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, nears the end of his tenure with the studio, he reveals that he grilled Harrison Ford for Star Wars secrets during their previous collaboration on The Call of the Wild. Mangold took over from franchise director Steven Spielberg after collaborating with Ford as a producer for the 2020 adaptation of The Call of the Wild. Ford’s recommendation of Mangold to Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm head, and Spielberg led to the Logan director taking the helm for the final Indiana Jones adventure.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Mangold shared that he and Ford discussed the future of the Indiana Jones franchise and probed Ford for insights on Star Wars during their time on the set of The Call of the Wild. Mangold reminisced about their late-night shoots in Santa Clarita Valley, where Ford would share stories about the franchise and what they were working on.

“Obviously, you can’t be doing all night shoots in the middle of the Santa Clarita Valley, waiting for lighting setups to be completed and not start interviewing Harrison Ford with crazy Star Wars questions and Indy questions. Somewhere around 2 a.m., he’d start telling stories about what they were thinking of next and what they’re working on. Little did I know it would end up being me.”

Dial of Destiny Marks The Start Of A New Lucasfilm Era

Dial of Destiny Marks The Start Of A New Lucasfilm Era

After over 40 years of appearances on screen, Ford has confirmed that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be the end of his time as the eponymous adventurer. Rumors swirled about a prequel Indiana Jones series at Disney+ and a spinoff centered on Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Helena, Indy’s goddaughter set to be introduced in the new movie, though Mangold has since shut down the latter while the former was reportedly cancelled as Lucasfilm kept their focus on Star Wars TV shows and to allowing the Ford-led franchise to end.

With one franchise now coming to a close, and another forging a new future, Lucasfilm looks to be entering a new era following Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Though the Star Wars franchise has somewhat remained in the original trilogy era with The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fettthere are four new movies in the works that can expand the series past the Skywalker Saga, beginning with Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey with the untitled movie set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker and tentatively aiming for a late 2025 release.

Additionally, Mangold himself is set to write and direct a Star Wars movie set during the High Republic era, making it a prequel to all mainline movies and shows, while a Mandalorian movie wrapping up the show, the Taika Waititi-helmed movie, a Shawn levy-directed movie and Rian Johnson’s long-gestating trilogy. Between these various new storytellers and characters coming to a galaxy far, far away and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny bringing an end to another of the studio’s iconic franchises, Lucasfilm are heading into new and unique territory.
