Airbus has clinched an unprecedented deal with IndiGo, an Indian budget carrier, for the purchase of 500 narrowbody jets. This marks the largest-ever aircraft deal in history.
This order surpasses Air India’s recent provisional purchase of 470 aircraft, highlighting India’s major carriers’ expansion plans to cater to the growing demand for regional travel.
India’s Historic Order: 500 Flights, Biggest-Ever Deal
The CEO of IndiGo, Pieter Elbers, stated that the timing is perfect due to India’s growth and the increasing aviation market. These planes are expected to be delivered between 2030 and 2035. Indian carriers, trying to keep pace with the rapidly expanding aviation market, have set new industry records, even as manufacturers struggle to meet production targets.
With over a 6% share of the global industry backlog, Indian carriers now hold the second-largest order book, after the United States. IndiGo, which commands approximately 60% of the domestic market in India, is expected to continue using Airbus as its supplier for single-aisle jets, leveraging economies of scale.
