Jo Koy shows love to ex Chelsea Handler 1 year after breakup

Jo Koy has nothing but positive things to say about his former partner Chelsea Handler.

“She is a wonderful individual, and we are still friends,” the star of “Easter Sunday” exclusively told TheFantasyTimes at the Broadway premiere of “Here Lies Love” on Thursday night.

“It was a beautiful time,” he added, referring to their nearly year-long relationship. “She is currently doing wonderful things. She is excelling right now, and I only have the utmost love and respect for her.”

The two were longtime friends before they started dating in the summer of 2021.

They ended their relationship in July 2022, with Handler announcing their decision to “take a break” from their romance.

In December of last year, the former host of “Chelsea Lately,” who is 48 years old, revealed that she had not spoken to the 52-year-old Koy in “quite some time” and that she couldn’t resume their friendship unless he took “responsibility” for the end of their relationship.

“I mean, he has to take responsibility for what happened, you know? Because it was just absurd,” she said on Brooke Shields’ podcast “Now What?”.

While she didn’t elaborate on what Koy did wrong, Handler explained that their relationship had “deteriorated” over the course of the 11 months they were together.

“There were certain behaviors that we couldn’t agree on,” she shared. “And it felt like I would have to compromise my own values, which maybe I would have been willing to do if I were 20 or 25. But I wasn’t willing to do that.

“I had to walk away from something that I truly believed would be a lifelong relationship,” Handler added, before acknowledging that it became evident that Koy was not the right person for her.

“Walking away from him was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to do,” she confessed.

Koy, who served as one of the producers, attended the musical “Here Lies Love” by David Byrne and Slimboy Fat.

The show is based on the life of former Filipino first lady Imelda Marcos and the 1986 People Power Revolution that overthrew her and her husband, President Ferdinand Marcos.

The comedian, whose mother is Filipino, remembers living in the Philippines as a child during the corrupt Marcos regime.

Last December, the former “Chelsea Lately” host, 48, confessed that she had not spoken to Koy, 52, for “a while” and could not resume their friendship unless he took “accountability” for their demise as a couple.

“I mean, there has to be some accountability, you know what I mean? Like, from him about what happened, because it was just ridiculous,” she said on Brooke Shields’ “Now What?” podcast.

While she declined to explain what Koy did wrong, Handler explained that their relationship had “devolved” over the 11 months they were together.

“When I was a kid, I lived there, and I remember those times,” he told us. “So, you know, it was just a memory in my head, and now here we are on Broadway telling a story, a story that my mom’s family went through, and now we get to do it in a beautiful way.”

Koy, who came with his 20-year-old son, Joseph, was joined by other celebs including Spike Lee, who brought his two kids, “Insecure” star Natasha Rothwell and Daniel Dae Kim.

“Here Lies Love” is the first Broadway musical to feature an all-Filipino cast.
