Jon Hamm sings with Beck during a secret show at hip downtown bar
The most happening event during New York Fashion Week had nothing to do with fashion. The trendy crowd of downtown cool kids and rock stars were treated to an exclusive and secret performance by the renowned rocker Beck at the hip bar called the Mulberry. This weekend, after Beck’s show at Madison Square Garden, he set up a makeshift area at the small basement bar and called out to Jon Hamm, the star of “Mad Men,” to join him in playing a song. Jon Hamm eagerly joined Beck on stage and together they rocked the crowd, singing the entire hit song “Just What I Needed” by the Cars, in front of music heavyweights like Julian Casablanca of the Strokes, their manager Ryan Gentles, Patrick Carney of the Black Keys, Adam Green of the Moldy Peaches, and the Arctic Monkeys.
The surprise collaboration between Jon Hamm and Beck during the secret show and party that followed Beck’s Madison Square Garden performance was a highlight of the night. One guest jokingly commented, “He really added some Hamm-bience,” as everyone marveled at Jon Hamm’s singing talent. The crowd, which included Sofia Coppola, the director of “The Virgin Suicides,” Emma Roberts, the “Scream Queen,” Sarah Hyland, creative director Thomas Hayo, singer Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Celine’s Peter Utz, Alicia Solo, and Beck’s mom, Warhol Superstar Bibbe Hansen, enjoyed the late-night performance that started after 1 a.m. The band Phoenix, known for their hit song “1901” and also performers at Madison Square Garden as part of the Summer Odyssey tour, were also present at the party. The menu at the event was inspired by songs from both Beck and Phoenix, featuring dishes like “Listztomania” and “Devils Haircut.” Members of the Strokes, Phoenix, and the Arctic Monkeys were among the crowd.
Unfortunately, Phoenix had intended to perform in the underground space but left before Beck finished his set, much to the disappointment of the attendees. Jon Hamm attended the event with his new wife Anna Osceola, whom he married in June 2023 in Big Sur, California. Beck commented, “The Mulberry is NYC’s Viper Room,” drawing a comparison to the famous Sunset Strip spot owned by Johnny Depp, which was a hub for the rock scene before River Phoenix tragically passed away from a drug overdose outside in 1994. Jon Hamm’s presence on stage with Beck had guitarist Jason Falkner beaming.
It is worth mentioning that the Mulberry recently hosted a private party for Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses, which came to an end when heavy rainfall flooded the venue.
