Kevin Smith Really Wants to Make a Legacy Sequel to The Bad News Bears

Famed director Kevin Smith has expressed his desire to create a legacy sequel to the classic film Bad News Bears. Smith, who gained fame from the hit indie comedy Clerks in 1994, has directed a variety of films but has recently returned to his roots with Clerks III. Currently, he is working on a horror-comedy called Moose Jaws, which he describes as “like Jaws but with a moose instead of a shark”.

After Moose Jaws, Smith is hoping to direct a new sequel to Bad News Bears. In an episode of his podcast Fat Man Beyond, Smith mentioned other classic films he’d like to see rebooted such as The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension and The Shadow. However, his ultimate goal is to create a new Bad News Bears movie and even wants to make it a legacy sequel by bringing back characters from the original movie.

Smith envisions a Bad News Bears sequel where Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley) and Amanda Wurlitzer (Tatum O’Neal) are all grown up and are now the Walter Matthaus of the story coaching separate teams that play each other. Smith even has a name for it, a “Bears-iverse.”

Released in 1976 and directed by Michael Ritchie, The Bad News Bears starred Walter Mathau as the coach of a local youth baseball team. Haley and O’Neal were both children during filming, and bringing them back for a sequel would be a fun way to connect the storylines. Smith experienced this himself by capping off the Clerks story with a new installment.

However, there are other plans for the Bad News Bears franchise. CBS is reportedly working on a reboot in the form of a single-camera comedy series written by Corey Nickerson (Black-ish). Not much has been reported on about those plans since last fall, and it is unclear if the project is still on track or has since been scrapped.

The Bad News Bears previously had two sequels: 1977’s The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training and 1978’s The Bad News Bears Go to Japan. There was also a short-lived television series that aired for two seasons from 1979 to 1980. In 2005, an unconnected reboot was released as a feature film with Billy Bob Thornton playing a role similar to Walter Mathau’s in the original. It was a box office bomb and put the franchise on hold until the recent reports of a new planned reboot at CBS.

Film maker Kevin Smith has a legacy sequel to Bad News Bears that’s high atop his wish list. Smith, who rose to fame after his indie comedy Clerks became a big hit in 1994, has directed a variety of films, recently getting back behind the camera for Clerks III. Having gone back to his roots, Smith is working on the horror-comedy film Moose Jawsa story that the filmmaker describes as “like Jaws but with a moose instead of a shark.”

As for what’s after Moose Jawsperhaps that could be a new sequel to The Bad News Bears directed by Smith. While speaking about classic films he’d like to see rebooted on his podcast Fat Man Beyond (per ComicBook.com), Smith mentioned The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension and The Shadow as fun possibilities. But what he wants to see most of all, even hoping to direct such a reboot himself, is a new Bad News Bears movie. As Smith explains, he would even want it to be a legacy sequel by bringing back characters from the original movie.

The Bad News BearsI always wanted to do a Bad News Bears sequel where Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley) and Amanda Wurlitzer (Tatum O’Neal) are grown up, and they’re the Walter Matthaus, and they both coach separate f**king teams that got to play each other. Paramount, call me, there’s a Bears-iverse, I’m telling you right now, a Bad News-iverse.”

Released in 1976 by director Michael Ritchie, The Bad News Bears starred Walter Mathau as an alcoholic and former minor-league pitcher who’s recruited as the coach of a local youth baseball team. Haley and O’Neal were both children when that movie was made, and bringing the two of them back would be a fun way of bringing the story back full circle. This is something Smith recently experienced himself by capping off the Clerks story with a new installment.

The biggest hurdle facing Smith in his quest to make a new Bad News Bears movie is that there are other plans for that franchise at the moment. Last fall, it was reported that CBS was putting together a reboot in the form of a single-camera comedy series written by Corey Nickerson (Black-ish). However, not much has been reported on about those plans ever since, and it’s not entirely clear if the project is still on track at the network or if it has since been scrapped.

The Bad News Bears previously had two sequels: 1977’s The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training and 1978’s The Bad News Bears Go to Japan. From 1979 to 1980, there had also been a short-lived television series that aired for two seasons. An unconnected reboot would also be released as a feature film in 2005 with Billy Bob Thornton playing a role similar to who Mathau played in the original film. It was a box office bomb and put the franchise back on ice until the reports last year of a new planned reboot at CBS.
