Lady Gaga pays tribute to Tony Bennett on what would have been his 97th birthday

This affection cannot be bought. Lady Gaga delivered a heartfelt tribute to the late Tony Bennett, the iconic crooner who passed away at the age of 96 last month. Taking to social media on Thursday, the “Rain On Me” sensation reflected on her friendship with the legendary singer on what would have been his 97th birthday. “Happy Birthday Tony. August 3rd is Tony Bennett Day. A day for happiness. But I will celebrate you more than once a year,” expressed Gaga, aged 37, in her Instagram post, accompanied by several images of herself at an NYC food cart. “I will celebrate you every time I perform jazz music on stage, every time I am with your family, and every time I walk the streets of New York. I will look around and remember all that you did for this city and the entire world. 😘”

In the photos, Gaga exuded elegance in a stunning black dress, paired with a black beret, sunglasses, and a black purse. Alongside the caption, the singer shared three pictures of herself sporting the black ensemble while perched in front of a food cart.

This tribute follows her initial homage to Bennett on July 31. “I will forever miss my friend. I will miss singing, recording, and conversing with him, as well as sharing the stage,” wrote the “Bad Romance” artist on Instagram. “With Tony, I experienced life in a different era. We transported ourselves to another time, revitalized the music together, and breathed new life into it as a singing duo. But it wasn’t an act. Our relationship was genuine,” she penned. “He taught me about music and showbiz life, but he also showed me how to stay positive and focused. ‘Straight ahead,’ he would say. He was an optimist, believing in both high-quality work and a high-quality life. And let’s not forget the gratitude… Tony always expressed his gratitude,” she added.

The unlikely duo released two acclaimed albums together, “Cheek to Cheek” in 2014 and “Love for Sale” in 2021, both of which garnered Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

Gaga revealed that she has been mourning Bennett’s loss for a significant period of time, as he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, leading to his retirement from performing in 2021 after an illustrious eight-decade career. “We shared a profound and extended farewell,” she shared. “Despite the five-decade age gap, he was my friend. My true and genuine friend. Our age difference did not matter. In fact, it provided us with something unique that we didn’t have with most people. We came from completely different stages of life and inspired each other.”

This love is not for sale.

The tribute came just days after her initial tribute to Bennett on July 31.

“I will miss my friend forever. I will miss singing with him, recording with him, talking with him, being on stage together,” the “Bad Romance” hitmaker wrote on Instagram.

“With Tony, I got to live my life in a time warp. Tony & I had this magical power. We transported ourselves to another era, modernized the music together, & gave it all new life as a singing duo. But it wasn’t an act. Our relationship was very real,” she penned.

“Sure he taught me about music, about showbiz life, but he also showed me how to keep my spirits high and my head screwed on straight. ‘Straight ahead,’ he’d say. He was an optimist, he believed in quality work AND quality life. Plus, there was the gratitude…Tony was always grateful,” she wrote in part.
