Last Airbender Casting Rumors Stoked By MCU Star After IRL ATLA Connection

Rumors about the casting of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been sparked due to a real-life connection between a star in the live-action TV series and Simu Liu, an actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Liu is widely recognized for his role as Shang-Chi in the MCU, having appeared in the 2021 solo film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He gained prominence with his first main role in the Canadian sitcom Kim’s Convenience, which revolves around a Korean family managing a convenience store in Toronto.

According to Avatar News, Liu might have hinted at his appearance in the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series.

In his post, Liu shared the words “And then the fire nation attacked,” which could be a subtle hint at him playing Lu Ten, Iroh’s son, in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. This would reunite Liu with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who played Liu’s father in Kim’s Convenience. However, Avatar News later tweeted that sources had debunked this potential casting.

Lu Ten was Iroh’s son in Avatar: The Last Airbender and the second in line to become Fire Lord after his father. Unfortunately, Lu Ten lost his life during the Siege of Ba Sing Se, causing Iroh to be consumed by grief over the loss of his son. This tragedy allowed his brother, Ozai, to seize the throne of the Fire Nation, ultimately leading to the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Although it does not appear that Liu will be portraying Lu Ten in the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender at the moment, it would provide an opportunity for him to reunite with Lee after their time together on Kim’s Convenience. If Liu were to eventually be cast as Lu Ten, it would likely be in the second season

Avatar: The Last Airbender casting rumors have been sparked thanks to a real-life connection between one star in the live-action TV series and Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Simu Liu. Liu is best known for his role as Shang-Chi in the MCU, appearing so far in his 2021 solo film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. His first main role was in the Canadian sitcom Kim’s Conveniencea show about a Korean family running a convenience store in Toronto.

Now, Avatar News reports that Liu may have subtly teased an appearance in the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series.

In the above post, Avatar News explains General Iroh will be played in live-action by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who played the main role and Liu’s father on Kim’s Convenience. Liu’s post, where he includes the words “And then the fire nation attacked,” could be a possible tease at him playing Iroh’s son, Lu Ten, in Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, reuniting the two actors. However, Avatar News later issued another tweet stating sources had debunked this potential casting.

Lu Ten was Iroh’s son in Avatar: The Last Airbender and second in line as the next Fire Lord after his father. However, Lu Ten died during the Seige of Ba Sing Se, causing Iroh’s grief to overtake him as he mourned the loss of his son. This allowed his brother, Ozai, to take the throne of the Fire Nation, leading to the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

While Liu so far does not seem to be playing Lu Ten in the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbenderit would allow him to reunite with Lee following their time together on Kim’s Convenience. However, if Liu were to eventually be cast as Lu Ten, it likely wouldn’t be until Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, based on when his animated counterpart appears. While Liu’s role would be little more than a cameo, it could make for a worthwhile reunion between the Kim’s Convenience actors if he were cast.

For now, it seems the full cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender has been announced, alongside a release window of 2024. It may not be confirmed that Liu will appear in the series, but he could make a good fit for Lu Ten, even if he wouldn’t show up for very long. Perhaps a small Kim’s Convenience reunion between Liu and Lee will happen in a future season of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
