Camila Alves, the wife of actor Matthew McConaughey, recently opened up about her experience with her mother-in-law, Mary McCabe, and how she managed to win her over. In a podcast episode of “Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam,” Alves shared the challenges she faced when she first entered the picture.
According to Alves, McCabe put her through a series of tests to see if she was a suitable fit for the family. “She did all these things when I first came in the picture, right? She was really testing me,” Alves recalled. “I mean, really testing me.”
These tests included McCabe calling Alves by the names of Matthew’s ex-girlfriends and speaking broken Spanish to her, subtly putting her down. Alves described it as a variety of tactics to challenge her. However, she didn’t let it discourage her.
To win over McCabe, Alves had a clever plan. She invited her mother-in-law to join her on a work trip to Istanbul. During the plane ride, McCabe shared stories and tried to influence Alves. However, by the third day of the trip, Alves saw through her tactics and decided to confront her.
“I just flipped it on her and brought out my spicy Brazilian, Latin side, and I let her have it,” Alves said. They engaged in a back-and-forth exchange until McCabe finally acknowledged Alves’ resilience and accepted her as part of the family. From that moment on, their relationship blossomed.
Alves emphasized the strong bond she now shares with her mother-in-law, stating that they have immense respect for each other. While their relationship can have its tricky moments, they always find a way to sort things out with a good laugh and a joke.
Alves and McConaughey’s journey began in 2006 when they first started dating. After six years, they tied the knot in 2012 and now have three children together: Levi, Vida, and Livingston.
So, if you’re facing challenges with your mother-in-law, remember that with patience, understanding, and a little bit of humor, you can build a loving and respectful relationship that lasts a lifetime.

Camila Alves claimed that Matthew McConaughey’s mom, Mary McCabe, put her through the wringer before fully accepting her into the family fold.
“She did all these things when I first came in the picture, right? She was really testing me,” Alves recalled on Tuesday’s episode of “Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam” podcast.
“I mean, really testing me.”
“She would call me by all of Matthew’s ex-girlfriends’ names, she would start speaking Spanish with me in a very broken way, kind of putting [me] down a bit. I mean, all kinds of stuff,” the Brazilian model added.
Alves then revealed that she eventually won the “Dazed and Confused” star’s mother over after inviting McCabe to join her on a work trip to Istanbul.

“The whole way there, the whole plane ride to Istanbul, she was telling me all these stories and putting all these things in my head,” Alves shared.
However, on day three of the trip, the designer playfully explained that she realized McCabe was “full of s—t.”
“So I just flip it on her and brought my spicy Brazilian, Latin side, and I let her have it,” she recalled.
“So I went back at her, and we had it back and forth, back and forth. And then at the end, she just looked at me and she was like, ‘OK. Now you’re in.’”
Alves realized that her now-mother-in-law just wanted her to “fight back.”
“And then from that day on, that night on, we have the most amazing relationship, and I have so much respect for her. She has so much respect for me,” she continued.
While the relationship can get “tricky” at times, she emphasized that the two always sort it out with a “good laugh and a joke.”
