Melissa Barrera Believes the Scream Movies Will Keep Coming Until Fans No Longer Want Them
At present, there is no official announcement for the release of the seventh installment of the iconic horror series Scream. However, Melissa Barrera, the franchise’s star, believes that it is just a matter of time before the announcement is made. The latest movie in the series, Scream VI, was a massive box office hit upon its release earlier this year. Even without the original final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Scream VI became the first film in the franchise to cross the $100 million mark, making it the highest-grossing movie in the series so far. Given the financial success, a sequel seems like a no-brainer.
Barrera made her debut in the franchise as Sam Carpenter in last year’s Scream and reprised her role in Scream VI this year. In a recent interview with NME, the scream queen reflected on becoming a part of the franchise, which has been surreal for her as a big fan of the previous movies. She is thrilled to be a part of the Scream family, but she has learned not to base her happiness on a film’s box office performance. Nevertheless, she is happy to see her co-stars from the franchise rise to fame, and she believes that they will change the industry for the better. Barrera explains:
“I love these movies and sometimes I can’t even believe I get to be a part of them. But I do feel very fortunate that Scream came out after In the Heights… In Mexico, I used to work to work – but in the US, I choose projects I’m devastatingly passionate about. Obviously Scream has a fandom, so it’s incredible to be part of that, but I’ve witnessed the other side of the industry. Hollywood is so extreme that you can’t base your happiness on the box office. With ScreamI feel like I’m on the rise with a certain group of people who are going to change the industry for the better.”
More Ghostface Killings Are Inevitable
Barrera cannot guarantee the release of Scream 7, but she feels that it is inevitable to have another sequel as long as fans continue to enjoy the Scream movies. With the franchise earning more money than ever at the box office, we might be seeing many more movies for years to come. When asked about the potential seventh film, Barrera expressed:
“It would be great to see where Sam’s story goes – there’s so many places it could go and I’m excited to see that. I don’t want to say yes or no to a Scream 7 movie, although it feels as long as people want Scream movies, they’ll continue to exist.”
