Mortal Kombat 1 Theory Suggests Shang Tsung Isn’t the Main Villain

A new footage of Mortal Kombat 1 seems to suggest that Shang Tsung may not be the primary antagonist in the game. Instead, the clip may have hinted at the return of a fan-favorite character in a major role in Mortal Kombat 1.

Shang Tsung, a powerful sorcerer with the ability to steal souls, is considered by many fans as the best villain in the Mortal Kombat series. He first appeared in the arcade version of the first Mortal Kombat as the main antagonist and unplayable final boss. However, he later became playable in Mortal Kombat 2 and a handful of other games in the series. Despite his evil nature, some fans have shown a soft spot for the character who, in later games, has been portrayed as an anti-hero rather than a villain.

While the developers of Mortal Kombat 1 have confirmed that Shang Tsung is a playable character in the game, they have not yet revealed his role in the story. During the Mortal Kombat 1 stress test, a Twitter clip was posted that may shed some light on who the main villain could be. In the clip, two Liu Kang players are seen on the character select screen, with one of them asking if Onaga exists in their timeline. The other Liu Kang responds by saying that not only does Onaga exist in his timeline, but he also rules it.

Onaga, also known as the Dragon King, was once the ruler of Outworld. He first appeared as the main villain in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and returned as a playable character in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Despite his death, Onaga remains a popular character in the Mortal Kombat universe and a fan favorite. He is considered one of the most powerful characters in the lore, and many fans are hoping for his return in Mortal Kombat 1.

It is important to note that the recent footage is not a confirmation of Onaga’s return. There is a possibility that the exchange between the two Liu Kang players is just a reference to the dead Dragon King and nothing more. It is difficult to determine who the main villain will be in this latest installment

Dragon King Onaga - Mortal Kombat Liu Kang Trivia

Of course, this recent footage is not confirmation of the character’s return. There’s always the chance that the moment between the two Liu Kang players is just a nod to the dead Dragon King and nothing more. It’s tough to say which character should be crowned the main villain in this newest entry. Mortal Kombat 1 is a title that’s reminiscent of the first game in the series where Shang Tsung was the main villain, so it feels full circle for him to be the main bad guy here. However, if the developers want a truly rebooted feel to Mortal Kombat 1perhaps a newer villain like Onaga should fill the role.

Mortal Kombat 1 will release on September 19 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
