Netflix’s Nimona Debuts at Annecy Animation Festival After Production Hurdles

Nimona, the highly anticipated film from Netflix, is finally making its debut at the Annecy Animation Film Festival. The journey of bringing this film from an idea to the big screen is a story of perseverance and creative ingenuity, which is fitting for the larger-than-life character it portrays, as reported by Variety.

Nimona is an adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel by N.D. Stevenson. It takes the audience on an extraordinary adventure set in a futuristic medieval world. The story revolves around Ballister Boldheart, a knight who has been wrongly accused of a crime, and his only ally, Nimona, a mischievous teenager with an unexpected talent for shapeshifting. The twist? Ballister is pledged to vanquish creatures like Nimona, adding a layer of complexity to their alliance.

The genesis of Nimona as a film project dates back to 2015 when it was optioned by 20th Century Fox’s animation branch, Blue Sky Studios. However, the movie faced a series of hurdles that put its completion at risk. When Disney completed its merger with 20th Century Fox in 2019, the film continued its production under the stewardship of Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, who took over the creative direction in 2020. Despite the massive corporate consolidation and a global pandemic, the team kept the gears turning until 2021 when Disney decided to shutter Blue Sky Studios.

Undeterred by these challenges, former Blue Sky co-presidents Andrew Millstein and Robert Baird refused to let Nimona languish. They pitched the animatic (an animated storyboard) around Hollywood and caught the eye of Megan Ellison, CEO of Annapurna. She saw the potential in Nimona, and her affinity for the project stemmed from its unique, outsider appeal.

“Nimona has such a powerful voice,” Ellison stated, praising the story for its unconventional narrative and robust character development.

Annapurna stepped in, signing Millstein and Baird as executive producers. They launched Shapeshifter Films to ensure Nimona saw completion and joined forces with Annapurna Animation. To assist with the animation, DNEG Animation was brought on board in the spring of 2021, becoming a collaborative contributor to the film’s creation.

In the ever-evolving landscape of film distribution, Netflix emerged as the perfect partner to bring Nimona to a global audience. A platform known for championing innovative animated features like Klaus and I Lost My Body, Netflix has a reputation for embracing unique and creative storytelling.

Nimona boasts an ensemble of stars to give life to the characters and lend their voices to the respective personas in the movie. You can expect to hear Riz Ahmed, Chloë Grace Moretz, Eugene Lee Yang, Lorraine Toussaint, Indya Moore, and RuPaul Charles, among others. After it debuts at the Annecy Animation Film Festival on June 14, the animation feature will be released on June 30.

The Nimona team persevered through a long and challenging process to bring the film to where it is today. Its twisted road to the big screen exemplifies the spirit of creative perseverance, and its eventual debut is a celebration of a shared vision finally coming to fruition. Nimona is a highly anticipated film that promises to delight audiences with its bold storytelling, innovative animation, and an unforgettable cast of characters.
