According to The India Box Office Report by Ormax Media, May was a much-needed success for the box office, following three months of disappointing numbers. With a total collection of Rs 763 crore, May became the second-best performing month of the year, surpassed only by January’s collection of Rs 1,388 crore.
Compared to the same period in 2022, box office numbers for the first five months of 2023 have decreased by 22%.
Ormax’s report uses Gross Box Office as the unified measurement, which attributes a film’s collection to the month of its release. Even if a film goes on to produce more or better numbers in the following months, its collection will always be attributed to its release month. For films released in multiple languages, box office numbers reflect the contribution of such films to all corresponding languages.
The Kerala Story Takes the Top Spot
Sudipto Sen’s The Kerala Story sparked sociopolitical controversy, which helped it amass a total collection of Rs 268 crore in May, aided by its release just five days into the month. The film’s impressive collection has seen it overtake Varisu to take the second spot on the list of the year’s highest-grossing films. However, The Kerala Story is still trailing behind Pathan (Rs 646 crore) on the 2023 charts, and catching up with Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham’s blockbuster seems unlikely.
In May, two other films surpassed the Rs 100 crore mark: Hollywood action movie Fast X, featuring Vin Diesel and Jason Momoa, finished the month with a collection of Rs 135 crore, while 2018, a Malayalam drama about catastrophic floods, brought in Rs 103 crore. The top five were rounded off by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (at Rs 72 crore) and Tamil drama Pichaikkaran 2 (at Rs 34 crore).
Hindi’s Share Remains Stable at the Box Office
With May’s significant boost to box office numbers, 2023 is now projected to gross Rs 9,211 crore at the box office. However, this falls short of last year’s tally of Rs 10,637 crore. To match 2022’s collection, the remaining seven months of the year must average at least Rs 971 crore per month, which requires one or more blockbusters every month.
Regarding language share, Hindi remains stable, with a 38% share, the same as in April. Meanwhile, the share of both Telugu and Tamil has decreased since April, with the two segments closing out May at 20% and 18%, respectively.
