Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: Best Dragon Types

The Pokemon franchise is known for its diverse range of powerful Pokemon, with Dragon-types being one of the strongest types in the game since the first generation. In the latest title, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Game Freak has introduced even more interesting Dragon-type Pokemon for players to capture and add to their teams while exploring the region of Paldea. Here are some of the strongest Dragon-type Pokemon that players should consider capturing.

Tatsugiri is a small fish that looks like a piece of Sushi but is surprisingly a Dragon-type Pokemon. While it may seem weak, it is incredibly intelligent and can call upon the aid of Dondozo to help in battle and with getting food. In two vs two battles, Tatsugiri can use its signature ability of Commander to hop into the mouth of an ally Dondozo on the field, making it unable to be hit.

Dragalge is a powerful Dragon-type and Poison-type Pokemon that is a great choice for those looking for a pseudo-legendary Dragon for their roster and an incredibly powerful Poison-type. With its high Special Defense, Dragalge can stay alive in various battles and hit hard. However, it is a version exclusive and can only be found in Pokemon Scarlet.

Altaria may not look like a typical Dragon-type Pokemon, but it is one of the best Dragon-types to consider and can be found flying around in the wild or evolved from a captured Swablu. As a Flying-type Pokemon, it may have become less useful in recent games, but Altaria continues to be a powerful member of any player’s team.

Appletun is an interesting Pokemon with adorable appearance and powerful Dragon and Grass-type attacks. It can evolve from Applin, but only if given a Sweet Apple. Appletun can learn the unique move Apple Acid, which deals a significant amount of damage to enemies while lowering their Special Defense.

Cyclizar may seem basic compared to its futuristic relative Miraidon and its ancient ancestor Koraidon, but it is still an interesting early game choice for players until they can use their own legendary in battle. Combining Dragon with Normal may not seem special, but it allows players to confidently go up against Ghost-type Pokemon without worrying about its move set.

Noivern is a sound wave bat Pokemon that is Flying and Dragon-type. Evolving from Noibat, it may seem adorable but can be incredibly cruel to Pokemon in the dark while timid in the light. Players can find Noivern exploring the outdoors instead of a damp cave.

Roaring Moon is the only Dragon-type Paradox Pokemon available, and it can only be found by those that visit Area Zero in Pokemon Scarlet. It is a powerful Pokemon that is exclusive to Scarlet, but Violet players can get its relative Salamence, which is a Dragon-type combined with Flying. Otherwise, they would need to trade with a Scarlet player.

Miraidon is the futuristic relative of Cylizar, combining its Dragon-typing with Electric and making it a force to be reckoned with. Its Hadron Energy ability can increase its Electric moves’ power, making it even stronger in battle.

Koraidon is a slightly more powerful Dragon-type than Miraidon and is the ancient ancestor of Cylizar. As a Fighting-type dragon, it is incredibly powerful in hand-to-hand combat and an excellent choice for battling Tera Raids.

Hydreigon is a dual-type of Dark and Dragon and a popular pseudo-legendary Pokemon for its high Special Attack. However, it is only available in Pokemon Scarlet, and players must trade with someone who has it to add it to their team.

Garchomp is another fan-favorite and one of the most powerful Dragon-types in the game. Players can find it while exploring the region of Paldea, but they are likely to encounter its pre-evolution, Gible, first.

In conclusion, these are the strongest Dragon-type Pokemon that players should try capturing while playing Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. With so many new additions to the franchise, as well as plenty of old favorites, players have an abundance of options to choose from while exploring the region of Paldea.

The Pokemon franchise has been known to have a variety of powerful Pokemon with numerous types combined. Arguably one of the strongest types in the game are Dragon-types which have been a part of the franchise since the first generation.

In the most recent title of Pokemon Scarlet and VioletGame Freak continues to include interesting dragon-type Pokemon for players to capture. With so many new additions to the franchise, as well as plenty of old favorites, these are by far the strongest Dragon-type Pokemon players should try capturing while exploring the region of Paldea in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Updated June 26, 2023 by Megan Smith: Since May this year, players have finally had access to the recent Nintendo Switch feature of Pokemon Home. This has allowed players to bring Pokemon from past games of the franchise and use them in battle during their adventures in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Therefore, many trainers have finally been able to bring some of the most favored Dragon-type Pokemon into the game.

However, there are still many other alternatives of Dragon-type Pokemon that some players may still wish to use instead. While adventuring in the likes of Pokemon Scarlet or Pokemon Violet, Dragon-types can be easily found or evolved. These are by far more amazing options players should consider.

13 Tatsugiri

It’s surprising to think that this small fish that replicates the look of a piece of Sushi could be considered a Dragon-type Pokemon, however, in Scarlet and Violet it is exactly that. Tatsugiri may appear as one of the weakest Dragon-types in the game, but they are also incredibly intelligent as they call upon the aid of Dondozo to help them in not only battle but also to get food.

While taking part in two vs two battles, Tatsugiri may use its signature ability of Commander which allows it to hop into the mouth of an ally Dondozo that is on the field. While in this match-up, Tatsugiri is unable to be hit.

12 Dragalge

Dragalge is an incredible Dragon-type and Poison-Type Pokemon that is not only a great choice for those looking for a pseudo-legendary Dragon for their roster but also for those looking for an incredibly powerful Poison-type too. With its Special Defense being one of its highest stats, Dragalge is also sure to stay alive in various battles, especially as it can also hit incredibly hard too.

Some Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet are certain version exclusives. Dragalge can therefore only be found in Pokemon Scarlet. Thankfully, players who own Pokemon Violet can still get their hands on this Mock Kelp Pokemon by trading with a player that has the other version of the game.

11 Altars

Although Altaria doesn’t look like the player’s typical Dragon-type Pokemon, Altaria has earned itself a place as one of the best Dragon-types a player may wish to consider that isn’t one of the new additions. Players can either find Altaria flying around in the wild or evolve it at around level thirty-five once capturing a Swablu.

As its fluffy cloud-like wings that wrap around its body suggest, Altaria is also a Flying-type Pokemon. This typing may have become less useful in recent games since players can freely fast travel around the map, but Altaria continues to be a powerful member of any player’s team.

10 Appletun

Appeltun is another interesting Pokemon players are likely to want on their team for not only its adorable appearance but also its powerful Dragon and Grass-type attacks. Unlike other Pokemon, Appletun evolves from Applin once the Pokemon has been given a Sweet Apple. Otherwise, Applin becomes Flapple, which is another great Dragon-type that players should consider.

Besides having the usual Dragon-type moves available to the Pokemon, Appletun is also the only monster that can learn the move Apple Acid. This Grass-Type move deals a substantial amount of damage to an enemy while also lowering its Special Defense. This benefits Appletun greatly as its best stats involve its Special Attack.

9 Cyclizar

Although Cyclizar may be considered quite basic compared to its futuristic relative Miraidon and its ancient ancestor Koraidon. This doesn’t stop Cyclizar from being an interesting choice early in the game for players until they are able to use their own legendary in battle.

Combining Dragon with Normal may not seem that special, but this does mean players have a Pokemon that can confidentially go up against a Ghost-type Pokemon without worrying about its move set too much. Besides this Cyclizar is just an adorable Pokemon to have on the team, and it’s unfortunate that the players can’t use them as a vehicle like the other NPCs can.

8 Noivern

Stepping away from the newest Pokemon added with Pokemon Scarlet and Violetplayers may also remember dragon types such as the sound wave bat Pokemon Noivern. While some players may think Noivern would be a combination of Dark and Dragon they are actually Flying and Dragon.

Players would first need to evolve Noibat, who is purely Flying-type if they wish to have this dragon bat. Don’t be fooled by its adorable design as Noivern has been known to be incredibly cruel to Pokemon in the dark, while incredibly timid in the light. Luckily, many players will find this Pokemon exploring the outdoors, instead of a damp cave.

7 Roaring Moon

With plenty of Paradox Pokemon for players to catch in both versions of the game, Roaring Moon is the only Dragon-type Paradox Pokemon available, and it can only be found by those that visit Area Zero in Pokemon Scarlet. As one of a kind, it is of no surprise how powerful it is.

Although a Scarlet exclusive, Violet players can instead get their hands on its relative Salamence, which is also a Dragon-type but instead of being combined with Dark, this large dragon is combined with Flying. Otherwise, a player will need to trade with a Scarlet player.

6 Miraidon

Miraidon is the futuristic relative of Cylizar, taking his design and combining it with a variety of metal features.

Combining its Dragon-typing with Electric, Miraidon is a force many trainers will not want to compete against. Not only this but with the incredibly powerful ability of Hadron Energy, it can increase its Electric moves to be even more powerful, such as increasing the damage of all Electric moves.

5 Koraidon

Players that decided to pick up Pokemon Scarlet have a slight advantage when it comes to their box art legendary and companion throughout the game. As the ancient ancestor of Cylizar, Koraidon is a slightly more powerful Dragon-type than Miraidon.

As a Fighting-type dragon, Koraidon is incredibly powerful in hand-to-hand combat making it an incredible fighter to bring into battle, this has left many players to rely on it when attempting to take on Tera Raids. Although they are each exclusive to their games a second can be captured and traded off to other players.

4 Hydreigon

Pseudo-legendary Pokemon are incredibly popular for many players as they are usually some of the most powerful companions a player could bring into battle. Hydreigon is the dual-type of Dark and Dragon that continues to be powerful even when at its starter evolution of Deino. This Dragon-type has an incredibly high Special Attack stat that players will want to consider when choosing the right moves for their Pokemon.

While players that own Pokemon Violet may have a futuristic Paradox Pokemon variation, they cannot find Hydreigon in the wild. Once again, a player must trade with someone else who has Pokemon Scarlet to get this Brutal Pokemon.

3 Garchomp

Surprisingly still, another legendary Pokemon and fan favorite, Garchomp continues to be one of the most powerful Dragon-types, and players can find it once again while exploring the region of Paldea. However, players are likely to find a Gible first when on their travels which can then be evolved into the forever powerful Garchomp.

While the new Dragon-types may be interesting, if a player is looking for familiarity or a powerful member for their roster, then there is no shame in going back to the basics with Garchomp. Especially with so few powerful Ground-types available.

2 Dragapult

Dragapult is another pseudo-legendary Dragon-type Pokemon that many players should consider having on their team. Starting as Dreepy, this once tiny ghostly Dragon-type Pokemon will eventually evolve into a stealthy force that is widely known for its incredible speed and attack stats.

Besides its unbelievable stats, Dragapult also has the signature move of Dragon Darts that deals a critical amount of damage twice. Unfortunately, this Dragon-type Pokemon is another pocket monster that can only be found on one certain version of the game. Players that don’t own Pokemon Violet will have to attempt to get Dragapult or any of its three evolutions through trading.

1 Baxcalibur

However, a new dragon champion rose with the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet as another pseudo-legendary was introduced. Baxcalibur is the third and final evolution of the small and adorable Dragon and Ice-type Pokemon, Frigibax, before it becomes a ginormous and deadly Kaiju.

Besides being a new Pokemon, it is also the only Pokemon to know the new move Glaive Rush which may be an incredibly intense move but can also be dangerous to the user. Every move for the next turn can’t miss Baxcalibur as well as being double damage. It is also the only evolution line to have the ability Thermal Exchange, which means when it is hit by a fire move its own attack is doubled.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available now on the Nintendo Switch.
