Pom Klementieff and Vanessa Kirby on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Screen Rant: You both did an amazing job in this film. As a huge fan of the Mission: Impossible franchise, I believe each installment keeps getting better and better. Pom, this is your first time in a Mission: Impossible movie, and your character Paris is completely different from Mantis. Can you talk about your character and what attracted you to the role?

Pom Klementieff: Oh my God. I think we first met during the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 press tour, right? I remember. It’s such a different experience. What drew me to the character was working with Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise. Whatever character they wanted me to play, we would have found something cool to do. But their process is the complete opposite of the usual. They cast the actor first and then build the character around their abilities and what they bring to the table. It’s an ongoing conversation, and we create it together. That’s amazing because it gives us so much freedom. There are many scenes and moments, like the heart I draw on the train. That was improvisation; it was never in the script. There’s so much freedom in working with them.

Vanessa, we were introduced to your character in Fallout, but The White Widow also appears in this film. Can you tell us how she feels about Ethan, who she may still believe to be Locke?

Vanessa Kirby: Yeah, I think she finds him the most perplexing out of all the people she deals with. It was amazing to have this strange relationship between them in Fallout, with her being double-crossed by him but also having affection for him and understanding the burdens they both carry. We always liked the idea that there’s a mutual recognition between them, coming from completely different worlds and facing different pressures, yet somehow understanding each other. It was really fun to come back, a little wilder and heavier in some ways. It was truly an honor to reprise the role. I’m thrilled to be a part of this Mission: Impossible movie.

Pom, the action in this film is intense and unlike anything else. How would you compare the Mission: Impossible action to other films? And how does Tom Cruise elevate it?

x

Pom Klementieff: Oh my God. It’s mind-blowing. He’s so inspiring. He always pushes himself and challenges himself. Both Christopher McQuarrie and Tom have such a love for filmmaking and movies from all around the world. They have extensive knowledge and passion for detail. It’s evident in the training Tom undergoes and the training the other actors receive from the incredible stunt team, led by Wade Eastwood, who also worked on the previous movies. The combination of training, shooting, and the constant pursuit of improvement through editing and reshooting makes the action perfect. They’re always revisiting scenes, trying something different, and making it even better. I watched the movie, and it was hard to fall asleep because I was so excited. It truly feels like a masterpiece. It’s mind-blowing.

Vanessa, the technology in previous Mission: Impossible movies felt like science fiction, but the AI and Entity in this film feel relevant. What are your thoughts on this cautionary tale, and what do you hope audiences take away from it?

Vanessa Kirby: It’s interesting to think that Tom and Chris had the idea for this movie years ago, and now it’s developed and released. I believe it must have been a part of all of us, a collective unconsciousness, as we live in such a technological age. Our relationship with machines and technology is personal; we carry our phones with us all the time. We probably spend more time with our phones than with our friends nowadays. It’s a sad truth, but it’s relevant to everyone, no matter who you are. Your relationship with technology and how you feel about it is something everyone faces.

Ethan Hunt hanging on for dear life in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Screen Rant: Amazing job with this film. I’m a huge Mission: Impossible fan, and I feel like every installment just gets better and better. Pom, this is your first time in a Mission: Impossible movie, and this is the exact opposite character from Mantis. Can you talk about your character Paris, and what drew you to the role?

Pom Klementieff: Oh my God. I think we met on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 press tour, right? I remember.

I mean, it’s so different. What drew me to the character is just Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise. Whatever character they want me to play, we would have found something cool to do. But actually, their process is the opposite [of the] usual. They just cast the actor, and then they build the character around the actor’s abilities and whatever the actor brings to the table too.

It’s ongoing conversations, and we just create it together. That’s amazing, because we have a lot of freedom as well. There’s a lot of scenes and moments, [like] on the train at some point there’s a heart that I draw, and that was improvisation. It was never written in the script; I just did it. There’s so much freedom with working with them

Vanessa, we get introduced to your character in Falloutbut The White Widow appears in this film too. Can you talk to me about how she feels about Ethan, who she may still believe to be Locke?

Vanessa Kirby: Yeah, I think she finds him the most baffling of all the people that she deals with. And it was amazing in Fallout to have this really strange relationship between them, and her be kind of double-crossed by him, but also have this affection for him and recognize the burden they’re both under. We always like the idea that there’s a recognition between them of being from completely different worlds and having completely different pressures on them, but somehow understanding each other. It was really fun to come back a little bit wilder; a little bit heavier in some ways. And it was an honor to be back, honestly. I’m so thrilled.

I feel like this Mission: Impossible movie is cinematic adrenaline. Pom, the action is intense, and this is a lot different than anything else cinematically. How do you compare the Mission: Impossible action to anything else? And how does Tom Cruise elevate that?

Pom Klementieff: Oh, my God. I mean, it’s mind-blowing. He’s so, so, so inspiring. He always pushes himself; challenges himself. Both Christopher McQuarrie and Tom have such love for moviemaking, and movies from all around the world. They know everything. They can quote so many movies. And they have such passion and attention to detail.

It goes with the training that Tom goes through, and that the other actors go through with an incredible stunt team and Wade Eastwood, who’s the stunt coordinator and worked on the previous movies as well. With the training and then shooting, and then always making things better with the editing and maybe reshooting sometimes. Just going again, revisiting the scene, and doing something different. And maybe going like, “What about this instead?” and then it makes the thing just perfect.

I watched the movie as well, and it was hard for me to fall asleep at night because I was so excited. I was like, “Oh my God, what have you done? What have we done?” It feels like a masterpiece. It’s mind-blowing.

It really does. Vanessa, the technology in the past Mission: Impossible movies almost felt like science fiction, whereas AI and the Entity in this movie are so relevant. Talk to me about what you think about this being a cautionary tale and what you hope audiences take away from that aspect of the film.

Vanessa Kirby: It’s interesting to think that Tom and Chris had the idea of this movie years ago, and then it’s developed and come out now. I think in a way that means it must have been part of all of us, sort of a collective unconscious when we live in such a technological age. And I suppose that our relationship to machines and technology is so personal, and we carry a phone around in our hands all the time. We probably spend more time with our phones than our friends really nowadays.

Pom Klementieff: So sad.

Vanessa Kirby: It’s the truth. That’s probably true for so many people across the world. I think maybe it’s incredibly relevant – and I think it probably is a question for everybody, no matter who you are. I think your relationship to it and how you feel about it is what’s facing everybody.
