Power Rangers’ Zombie Apocalypse Upgrades Their Original ’90s Weapons

Caution! This article contains spoilers for Power Rangers Unlimited: The Coinless #1 The Power Rangers have always been a formidable force, even on a cosmic scale (as the more recent comic runs have confirmed), though that doesn’t mean they don’t have room for a few upgrades, especially when it comes to their weapons. Fortunately for them (kind of) their world broke out into something of a zombie apocalypse, resulting in their ’90s weapons receiving that upgrade.

In the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, each of the Rangers obtained their own distinct weapons along with their individual zords and suits of different colors. The Red Ranger possessed the Power Sword, the Black Ranger had the Power Axe, the Blue Ranger had the Power Lance, the Yellow Ranger had the Power Daggers, and the Pink Ranger had the Power Bow. Additionally, they all had access to their Blade Blaster sidearm, although they primarily utilized their special weapons unless they defeated the villains with their superior combat skills and unmatched cosmic power. Moreover, exposing children to sword fighting and gun shooting isn’t ideal, so the showrunners understandably aimed to minimize that. However, in the World of the Coinless, there are no restrictions, allowing these alternate versions of the Rangers to be as ruthless as necessary when confronting the horde of zombie-like monsters corrupted and controlled by Dark Specter.

The Power Rangers’ Weapons Upgrades are Perfect for the World of the Coinless

In Power Rangers Unlimited: The Coinless #1 by Adam Cesare and Moisés Hidalgo, Lord Drakkon has returned to his original reality only to discover that the world he once conquered had been taken over by Dark Specter. Nearly every living person on the planet had transformed into something resembling a zombie, with Dark Specter’s demonic, lava-like appearance engulfing their otherwise human bodies. Due to the immense threat posed by Dark Specter, Lord Drakkon was compelled to join forces with the Coinless, a team consisting of the remaining Power Rangers from this reality. These Rangers lacked Morphers or Power Coins, rendering them unable to access the Morphin Grid and transform. Furthermore, the Coinless harbored a deep hatred for Lord Drakkon, resulting in a mutual disdain for working together. However, Lord Drakkon had a plan to restore the Power Rangers’ connection to the Morphin Grid, and by the end of the issue, Drakkon succeeded in bringing the Power Rangers back to this desolate world, equipped with notable upgrades.

Not to mention, slicing people with swords or shooting them with blaster pistols isn’t the greatest thing to be exposing children to, so the showrunners understandably tried to keep that to a minimum. However, in the World of the Coinless, there’s no holds barred, meaning these alternate versions of the Rangers can be as brutal as they need to be when going up against the horde of zombie-like monsters corrupted and controlled by Dark Specter.

In Power Rangers Unlimited: The Coinless #1 by Adam Cesare and Moisés Hidalgo, Lord Drakkon has returned to his original reality only to find that the world he conquered so long ago had been effectively taken over by Dark Specter. Nearly every living person on the planet had become something akin to a zombie, though with Dark Specter’s demonic, lava-like aesthetic engulfing their otherwise normal, human bodies. Given the extent of Dark Specter’s threat-level, Lord Drakkon was forced to team up with the Coinless – a team consisting of the remaining Power Rangers from this reality, each of them without Morphers or Power Coins, meaning they had no access to the Morphin Grid and couldn’t transform. Plus, the Coinless absolutely despise Lord Drakkon, making the disdain for working together decidedly mutual. However, Lord Drakkon had a way to restore the Power Rangers’ access to the Morphin Grid, and by the end of the issue, Drakkon succeeded in bringing the Power Rangers back to this desolate world – and with a few notable upgrades, at that.

Right when the Power Rangers’ collective power was restored, the area they were in was flooded with hordes of Dark Specter’s ‘zombies’, leading to a gruesome sequence depicting the Rangers cutting them all down one-by-one – at which point, their weapons upgrades became clear. Trini Kwan’s Power Daggers weren’t just daggers at all, but also had the option to become hand-held chainsaws. Similarly, the Red Ranger’s Blade Blaster sidearms became two massive guns that packed a much greater punch than the usual secondary weapons ever did in the ‘90s series. And the Power Lance is shown being stabbed into the face of one of Dark Specter’s minions as it surges with power in a brutally spectacular fashion.

While one reason these weapons seem as though they received a significant upgrade is undoubtedly attributed to how freely the Power Rangers are using them to kill their enemies, it can’t be denied that the chainsaw daggers and Super Blade Blasters are way deadlier than they were in the ‘90s series, and those upgrades are all thanks to the Power Rangers’ zombie apocalypse.
