‘Pretty Little Liars’ star Sasha Pieterse gained 70 pounds at 17 due to PCOS

Sasha Pieterse shared her experience of struggling to diagnose her PCOS, which resulted in weight gain while she was starring in the popular show “Pretty Little Liars.” Speaking on the podcast “The Squeeze” hosted by Taylor Lautner and his wife, Pieterse explained that she started noticing changes in her metabolism when she was around 15 or 16 years old. At 17, she gained 70 pounds in a year without any explanation.

Despite detailing her ongoing symptoms, Pieterse revealed that doctors were unable to provide her with answers for years. She expressed frustration at being told by gynecologists that her irregular period was due to her young age and that it would eventually regulate. During this time, she was still actively involved in “Pretty Little Liars.”

Pieterse visited over 15 gynecologists, some of whom blamed her for the weight gain. She found the experience disheartening and confusing, as she was taking care of her body but things were getting worse instead of better. Eventually, she was referred to an endocrinologist who diagnosed her with PCOS.

When Pieterse first heard about PCOS, she was unfamiliar with the condition. She learned that it is a hormone imbalance disease that cannot be cured but can go into a dormant state. Diagnosing PCOS is relatively straightforward, as hormone imbalances, low vitamin D levels, and deficiencies in various substances can be observed. The symptoms of PCOS vary from person to person, with some experiencing cysts on their ovaries, gastrointestinal issues, changes in hair growth, or weight gain. Pieterse had many of the outward symptoms that were visible to others.

Despite her PCOS diagnosis, Pieterse was able to give birth to her son Hendrix in 2020. She expressed gratitude for being able to conceive naturally, as PCOS often causes infertility issues for many women.

In 2018, Pieterse married her husband Hudson Scheaffer, and they welcomed their son Hendrix in November 2020. The actress considers their ability to get pregnant without complications as a blessing, considering her PCOS diagnosis and the common challenges of infertility associated with the condition.

Sasha Pieterse recalled her struggle to diagnose her PCOS, which led to weight gain while starring in her hit show, “Pretty Little Liars.”

“When I turned, it was probably around 15-16, I started noticing a difference in just my metabolism in general,” she told Taylor Lautner and his wife, Taylor Lautner, on Wednesday’s episode of their podcast, “The Squeeze.”

“At 17, I gained 70 pounds in the year, for no reason. There was no explanation for it.”

Pieterse, 27, explained that doctors weren’t able to give her an answer for years despite detailing her ongoing symptoms.

“I never had a regular period ever and I was just always told by gynecologists that I was just young. Like, ‘Don’t worry, it’ll regulate,’” she said.

“It was the most frustrating experience and disheartening because no matter what I did, no matter how well I behave, no matter how great I treated my body, things were actually getting worse rather than better. It was very, very confusing,” she explained.

Eventually, she was recommended to an endocrinologist who finally diagnosed her with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).

“I was like what’s that? I’d never heard of PCOS before. And it’s a disease, it’s not curable, it can be dormant,” Pieterse said.

“And the most frustrating part about this is that it’s fairly easy to diagnose. It’s a hormone imbalance. It’s a hormone disease, and it’s so easy to see because your testosterone or your estrogen will be really high, you’ll have really low vitamin D levels, you’ll be deficient in a lot of things.”

The “Geek Charming” star explained that every person has a different experience with the condition, with some experiencing cysts on their ovaries, gastrointestinal issues, changes to hair growth or weight gain.

“I had a lot of those outward symptoms that everyone could see,” she said.

In 2020, the “Honor List” actress revealed that she was pregnant with her first baby. She and husband Hudson Scheaffer — who wed in 2018 — welcomed their son, Hendrix, that November.

“Just the fact that we were able to get pregnant was such a blessing because with PCOS that made me nervous,” she previously told People.

“A lot of women have infertility issues and so we were expecting more difficulty, so it’s been an absolute blessing that we were able to just get pregnant by ourselves.”
