The English wicketkeeper-batter for Punjab Kings, Jonny Bairstow, will not participate in the IPL 2023 as he works to recover from the freak injury he sustained in September. The 2023 season will see Matthew Short, an uncapped Australian batsman, take over for Bairstow, according to media sources.
After starting to train again in late February as part of his rehabilitation, Kings, through the BCCI, had been waiting for Bairstow’s precise fitness status from the ECB. The BCCI reportedly told Kings on Saturday to move forward with the replacement, and the team confirmed the news later that day. Last week, Bairstow began practising batting in the Yorkshire nets. It is believed that he will try to play a few County Championship games in May, maybe while keeping wicket, in order to be fully ready for England’s next Test against Ireland at Lord’s on June 1. The ECB is pleased with Bairstow’s development and is optimistic that he will be ready to play a significant role in the Ashes, which begin on June 22.
Prior to the third and final Test of England’s home series against South Africa on September 2, Bairstow fractured his left leg and dislocated his ankle. When he slipped while playing golf with pals, he received several fibula fractures that necessitated the insertion of a plate during surgery a few days later. He also sustained ligament damage.

Since then, he has missed every match England has played in cricket, including the T20 World Cup, when he was scheduled to open with his skipper Jos Buttler.
