Rapper YNW Melly’s murder case declared a mistrial

Jurors were unable to reach a verdict in the double murder trial of YNW Melly.

After three days of deliberations, the 12-member panel informed Broward Circuit Court Judge John Murphy that they were deadlocked on the two first-degree murder charges against the rapper known for his song “Murder on My Mind”. The Miami Herald reported that the jury wrote to the judge on Saturday, stating, “We are still unable to reach a unanimous decision.”

Judge Murphy thanked the jurors for their service, saying, “We appreciate the fact you were here and ready to serve.”

Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, is accused of fatally shooting his childhood friends Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr. in October 2018 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

According to prosecutors, Melly, Anthony Williams (YNW Sakchaser), Christopher Thomas Jr. (YNW Juvy), and Cortland Henry (YNW Bortlen) were in a Jeep after a recording session at a local studio. Prosecutors allege that Melly and Henry shot and killed Williams and Thomas in the vehicle, and then drove the bodies to an area near the Everglades. They further claim that the shooting was staged to appear as a drive-by shooting, but ballistics tests indicate that the victims were shot from inside the Jeep.

The defense attorneys focused their case on the fact that the gun used in the crime was never recovered. They also argued that Melly had no apparent motive to kill his close friends. Melly pleaded not guilty to the charges in 2019.

Due to the mistrial, prosecutors, who had sought the death penalty, will likely retry the case with a new jury.

Prosecutors allege that Melly and Henry shot at the passenger and back sides of the Jeep from the outside to make it look like the deceased men had been the victims of a drive-by shooting.

However, prosecutors say ballistics tests show Williams and Thomas were shot from inside the Jeep.

Henry has been charged as an accomplice in the case and will be tried separately.
