Shakira gives show-stopping Video Vanguard performance at VMAs 2023
Shakira graciously accepted the prestigious Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 VMAs on Tuesday night, marking her first appearance on the MTV stage in 17 years. Expressing her gratitude, the 46-year-old “Hips Don’t Lie” singer thanked MTV for being a significant part of her career since she was only 18 years old. She also gave a special shout-out to her two sons, Milan and Sasha, aged 10 and 8 respectively, for providing her with the encouragement and support she needed. Shakira, who shares her children with ex Gerard Piqué, expressed her appreciation during her acceptance speech, stating, “Thank you so much for cheering me up and making me feel that Mama can do it all.”
Furthermore, Shakira expressed her gratitude towards various individuals while accepting the award, including her record label, her parents, and the “amazing women” she collaborates with. She commended them for their unwavering support and for helping her overcome the challenges she faces while juggling multiple roles.
The internationally acclaimed artist, introduced by Wyclef Jean, was lauded for her impressive record sales of 95 million worldwide, solidifying her position as one of the best-selling artists of all time. Notable past recipients of the annual MTV Video Vanguard Award include Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott.
In addition to accepting the Vanguard Award, which is akin to a lifetime achievement award, the Grammy-winning artist took the stage to deliver captivating performances of some of her greatest hits. Dressed in a stunning beige body suit adorned with sequins, Shakira mesmerized the audience with her energetic dance-filled renditions of songs like “Whenever, Wherever” and “Hips Don’t Lie.” She even added a pink metallic bomber jacket to her ensemble at one point. The highlight of her performance came when she was lifted by adoring fans and crowd-surfed to another elevated platform, captivating the cheering crowd.
Notably, this marked Shakira’s return to the VMAs stage after nearly two decades. The singer, who arrived at the event in a striking floor-length metallic gown, brought along her sons Milan and Sasha as her dates.
Later in the evening, Shakira, who stunned in a backless chainmail gown on the red carpet, took home the Best Collaboration award for her song “XQG” with Karol G. She was also nominated for three other awards, including Artist of the Year. She received a nomination for Best Latin for the same song with Karol G, as well as for her solo single “Acróstico.” This adds to her previous four VMA wins, dating back to her first award for International Viewer’s Choice (Latin America North) in 2000. Her last performance at the award ceremony was in 2006 when she won the award for “Hips Don’t Lie.”
Shakira’s remarkable night comes just over a year after her highly publicized breakup with longtime partner Gerard Piqué in June 2022. The former couple, who appeared with their two sons on the red carpet, separated amidst rumors of infidelity. Sources revealed that Shakira was devastated upon discovering Piqué’s affair with girlfriend Clara Chia Marti, which took place in the home they shared with their children. Despite their separation, Shakira and Piqué remain devoted parents to their two sons.
In recent months, Shakira has been linked to NBA star Jimmy Butler after the pair were seen enjoying a cozy dinner date in London.
