Sia couldn’t get out of bed for 3 years following ‘dark’ Erik Anders Lang divorce
Sia experienced profound feelings of depression following her divorce from filmmaker Erik Anders Lang in 2016. In a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the 47-year-old singer opened up about how this challenging period inspired her upcoming album, titled “Reasonable Woman.” She revealed that during the six to seven years leading up to her divorce, she had been sporadically writing songs. However, the divorce hit her hard, plunging her into a deep depression that lasted for three years, during which she was unable to do much of anything.
Despite her emotional turmoil, Sia found solace in recording “little bits and pieces” of music, even though it was difficult to motivate herself. Eventually, she realized that she had enough songs to create an album, relying on her management to determine which ones were the strongest. Sia admitted that she could recognize when a song was particularly good, but ultimately, she trusted her team’s judgment in selecting the final tracklist.
Sia and Erik Anders Lang had already been dating when Sia rose to fame in the early 2010s. They got married in August 2014 in a private ceremony at Sia’s home in Palm Springs, California. However, just two years later, the couple filed for divorce, with Sia revealing that she was severely depressed and spent most of her time in bed after their split.
The reason cited for their separation was “irreconcilable differences,” and Sia’s depression had a significant impact on her ability to create new music. As a result, she has not released any new material since then.
Despite previously stating that she would be single for the rest of her life, Sia surprised everyone by marrying Dan Bernard in May. The wedding took place at Villa Olivetta in Portofino, Italy, owned by fashion designers Stefano Dolce and Domenico Gabbana. Instead of a traditional white gown, Sia opted for a light pink lace dress, while her husband wore a matching light blue suit with a bow tie.
Although the guest list was small, the couple radiated love as they exchanged vows and shared a heartfelt kiss under an archway adorned with pastel flowers. Details about the timeline of their relationship remain unknown, but they made their first public appearance together at the premiere of “West Side Story” towards the end of 2021, wearing coordinating outfits.
Sia was “severely depressed” following her 2016 divorce from filmmaker Erik Anders Lang.
The 47-year-old singer recently sat down with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 to discuss how the “dark time” helped inspire her forthcoming album, “Reasonable Woman.”
“Well, actually, the truth is that I had just been every now and again writing a song here or there for the last six, seven years,” she told Lowe Thursday.
“I got divorced and that really threw me for a loop. That was such a dark time that I was in bed for three years, really, really severely depressed. And so I couldn’t really do anything for that period of time.”

While mourning the end of her marriage, the songwriter started recording “little bits and pieces here and there” — despite it being “really hard to get [her] out of bed.”
“And then, finally, it just turned out we had enough songs to make an album, enough good ones,” she explained. “So I just rely on my management to tell me when we’ve got enough good ones because I don’t really … I can tell when I think one is particularly good, I think I can tell, but they tell me when we’ve got 11 or 12 or 13 enough good ones, real good ones.”
The Australian singer and Lang, now 42, were already dating when the former rose to fame in the early 2010s. The pair eventually tied the knot in August 2014 during an intimate ceremony at her Palm Springs, Calif. home.

However, the “Breathe Me” singer filed for divorce from the documentary filmmaker just two years later.
“After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple,” the couple said in a joint statement obtained by TheFantasyTimes at the time. “We are, however, dedicated to remaining friends. There will be no further comment.”
In the filings, Sia simply cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split.

Although the singer — who adopted two teenage sons in 2019 — vowed to “be single for the rest of [her] life” in 2020, she wed Dan Bernard in May.
The pair said “I do” during a stunning ceremony at Villa Olivetta, the home of designers Stefano Dolce and Domenico Gabbana, in Portofino, Italy.

Given it was her second time down the aisle, the dashing bride opted for a light pink lace gown rather than an all-white frock.

While the guest list remained small, the pair looked every bit in love as they exchanged vows — and a sweet smooch — under an archway of pastel flowers.
Prior to their nuptials, the pair kept their romance under wraps and the exact timeline of their relationship is unknown.
However, one of their first public outings came towards the end of 2021, when the couple wore matching outfits to the premiere of “West Side Story.”
