SRH vs PBKS: When Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Punjab Kings by 8 wickets in TATA IPL 2023 Match 14 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, they earned their first victory of the year.
SRH vs PBKS, IPL 2023:
SRH limited PBKS to 143/9 thanks to a team effort, with Mayank Markande (4/15) taking the lead in bowling. Shikhar Dhawan scored a magnificent 99 in his fighting performance (63). But, Rahul Tripathi’s stunning counterattacking knock of 74* off 48 balls, which enabled him to reach the goal with 17 balls remaining, was insufficient.
During their powerhouse performance against the PBKS top order inside the Powerplay, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Marco Jansen laid the groundwork. Before Dhawan helped PBKS reach a respectable 143/9, Markande and Umran Malik continued the momentum in the middle overs and slashed through the middle and lower middle order.
Mayank Agarwal and Harry Brook, SRH’s openers, got the team off to a fast start by hitting six fours in the first 20 balls as they chased 144. Arshdeep took four of those six fours, but he quickly recovered by knuckle-balling Brook (13 off 14), who had been struck for four of those six fours.
The following over, while Nathan Ellis was bowling, PBKS had a chance to take a second wicket, but keeper Jitesh Sharma saved them with a difficult catch of Rahul Tripathi. By the end of the Powerplay, SRH had reached 34/1 when the PBKS bowlers took control, allowing only seven runs off the following two overs.
The next two tight overs came next. When Mayank Agarwal (21 off 20) attempted to hit a big shot but miscued it to long on, the pressure built and it culminated in a wicket.
Tripathi then launched an incredible counterattack that completely altered the game’s outcome. He let go of the tension by cutting a few balls from Chahar behind square for back-to-back fours in the same over. After SRH reached 67/2 after 10 overs, he turned his attention to Harpreet Brar, hitting three straight fours. After two more fours off Chahar, Tripathi maintained his pace and scored 11 runs off the 11th over. Tripathi smashed a six off Mohit Rathee that went straight down the middle for fifty runs in 35 deliveries. Tripathi and Markram also put together a fifty-run partnership off just 29 balls.
In order to reduce the problem to 26 off 30, Markram and Tripathi took on Mohit with 47 needed off 36 and hit him for three fours and a six. Markram struck four fours against Eliis from that point on, and Tripathi added one more to seal the victory by eight wickets.
As the duo put together a game-winning 100-run stand off 52 balls, Tripathi remained unbeaten on 74 off 48 balls while Markram was still not out on 37 off 21 balls.
Aiden Markram, the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, earlier decided to bowl after winning the toss. Adil Rashid, Anmolpreet Singh, and Abdul Samad were replaced by Heinrich Klassen, Marco Jansen, and Mayank Markande on the side. As stand-ins, they designated Mayank Dagar, Upendra Yadav, Glenn Phillips, Akeal Hosein, and Abdul Samad. Bhanuka Rajapaksa (injured) and Sikandar Raza were replaced in the side by Matthew Short, a rookie, and Mohit Rathee. As stand-ins, they designated Sikandar Raza, Kagiso Rabada, Harpreet Bhata, Atharva Taide, and Rishi Dhawan.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck off the first ball of the innings, trapping Prabhsimran Singh LBW, giving the SRH pacers the perfect start for the squad. In his first over, Marco Jansen also had an impact. He caught debutant Matthew Short LBW for one and came dangerously close to getting another wicket when the umpire raised his finger on the LBW appeal against Jitesh Sharma. However, the batter reviewed it and replays revealed that it was missing leg.
Dhawan struck a few fours off Bhuvneshwar to prevent the pressure from mounting. Jitesh Sharma, however, was lost to PBKS in the following over after hitting a straight shot off Jansen in the fourth over.
After that, Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran stabilised the situation and added 41 runs in 30 balls. At the conclusion of the Powerplay, PBKS had reached 41/3 when Curran hit Jansen for a six and a four. In the following three overs, the pair scored 28 runs. But in his first over, Mayank Markande broke the tie by removing Curran for 22. (15). One led to two when Impact Player Sikandar Raza, who took the place of Prabhsimran Singh, was caught at third man by Umran Malik, bringing PBKS down to 69/5. Then three as Markande used a fantastic googly to LBW Shahrukh Khan.
In his following over, Umran dismissed Harpreet Brar, and PBKS lost four wickets in four overs. Rahul Chahar might have been scored on by Umran in the same over, but the keeper couldn’t hold on to a difficult chance down the leg side. Rahul Chahar was out for LBW after being caught by Markande with another googly. It was unsuccessfully reviewed by the batter. Dhawan was stuck at the opposite end the entire time and observed the bloodshed. When he got closer to 50, he witnessed another player leave as Markande cleaned up Nathan Ellis with the wrong player after the latter failed his reverse sweep. Markande had outstanding final stats of 4-0-15-4.
Dhawan then continued to work the strike and celebrated reaching fifty with a six from T Natarajan over deep midwicket. The following ball was scooped over fine leg for back-to-back sixes. In the 18th over, the PBKS skipper turned his attention to Umran, striking him for two sixes and a four to push PBKS over the 120-point mark. Dhawan’s two fours against Bhuvneshwar, which brought nine runs off the penultimate over, helped him reach the 90s. He brought PBKS to 143/9 with a six off the final ball of the innings, bowled by Natarajan.
Dhawan, who was unbeaten at 99 off 66 balls with 12 fours and 5 sixes, fell one run short of his century.
