Star Wars Theory Reveals Rey Is More Than Just A Palpatine

According to a new theory in the Star Wars fandom, Rey Skywalker’s lineage may be more complex than previously thought. While it was revealed in The Rise of Skywalker that Rey was a descendant of Emperor Palpatine, it’s possible that there’s more to her family history.

Rey’s parents, Dathan and Miramir, were sought after by Palpatine due to their young daughter’s potential to become a vessel for his dark side spirit. Although Rey was left on Jakku for her own safety, it’s speculated that her mother may have had a connection to the Force. Miramir’s impressive piloting skills could be a hint towards her own Force sensitivity, possibly inherited from her grandmother.

If this is the case, then Rey’s heritage would extend beyond just the Palpatine bloodline. She could be a child of both a Jedi and a Sith, a concept that’s never been explored in the Star Wars universe. This would explain her immense power in the Force and her connection with Kylo Ren, as they were confirmed to be a dyad in the Force.

As Rey rebuilds the New Jedi Order in the upcoming Star Wars movie, this unique heritage could inform her teachings and create a more balanced Jedi methodology. She may even become a Gray Jedi, a status earned by those who embrace both the light and dark sides of the Force.

While this theory is purely speculative, it would certainly add an exciting new layer to Rey’s character and the Star Wars universe as a whole.

A new Star Wars theory suggests that Rey Skywalker may be much more than just a descendant of Emperor Palpatine. Having been born from a genetic strand cast of Palpatine and the woman he fell in love with, Rey lost both her parents who left her on Jakku for her own safety. As such, she was unaware of her true heritage until years later, though there may be elements not even Rey knows about in the existing Star Wars canon.

Although Kylo Ren claimed that Rey came from nothing in The Last Jedithe actual truth was revealed in the subsequent Rise of Skywalker. Born to Dathan and Miramir, Rey was sought by Emperor Palpatine who wanted her as a vessel for his dark side spirit. Despite living as anonymous junk traders on Jakku, Rey and her parents were discovered by Palpatine’s Sith assassin Ochi of Bestoon all the same. Although Dathan and Miramir were killed, Rey remained hidden, left to grow up alone as a junk trader herself. However, there may be more to Rey’s history beyond her connection to Emperor Palpatine via her father Dathan.

Rey’s Mother May Have Had The Force

Having been rejected by his “father” Palpatine due to his lack of Force sensitivity, Dathan escaped the Sith world of Exegol where he eventually crossed paths and fell in love with Miramir. As seen in the Star Wars novel Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher, Dathan and Miramir are on the run with their young daughter, doing everything they can to evade Ochi of Bestoon and protect Rey. While fleeing in a ship of their own, Dathan comments on Miramir’s impressive skills as a pilot to which Miramir only responds that her grandmother was a rather remarkable woman as well.

There’s certainly some allusion in Shadow of the Sith that Rey’s mother might have been keeping secrets from her husband. Perhaps Miramir was hiding the truth about her grandmother and who she really was. Miramir’s impressive skills as a pilot could be a tease pointing toward her own Force sensitivity inherited from her grandmother. To that end, Rey’s own great-grandmother might have been a Jedi, possibly even a survivor of Order 66 and the Jedi Purge.

Rey Could Be The Child Of Jedi AND Sith

If Rey’s mother and grandmother were indeed Force sensitive, it would mean that Rey is more than just a Palpatine. She’d instead belong to two different bloodlines combined within her. The potential for Rey Skywalker being a child of both a Jedi and a Sith Lord is rather intriguing, a reveal that would certainly inform her future in the Star Wars galaxy if this theory is ever proven true.

After Lucasfilm’s announcement revealing the development of a new Star Wars movie starring Rey as she rebuilds the New Jedi Order, there’s now an opportunity to train the next generation of Jedi like never before. She’ll effectively be able to teach them as brand-new kinds of Jedi for the new era following Palpatine’s ultimate destruction along with his forces on Exegol. Perhaps this includes a more balanced Jedi methodology, becoming more aligned with her own heritage sourced simultaneously from both the light and dark sides of the Force. This would likely earn Rey and her future students the status of Gray Jedi.

Rey’s Unique Heritage Could Explain Why She’s So Powerful

Rey and Kylo Ren in Star Wars

In The Rise of SkywalkerRey and Kylo Ren were confirmed to be a dyad in the Force, a powerful bond between Force-sensitives who amplify each other with their respective uses of the light and dark. Unseen for generations, Rey and Kylo’s connection explained their ability to interact despite being lightyears away from each other. It also made them an incredibly potent duo, with the resurrected Palpatine using their shared power to restore himself as he no longer needed Rey as a vessel. However, Palpatine was still defeated nonetheless by the end of The Rise of Skywalker.

Rey being descended from both Jedi and Sith bloodlines would explain her strength in the Force as well as her bond with Kylo Ren. Likewise, becoming far more powerful than a pure Palpatine and existing as a culmination of both the light and dark would make her more worthy of the Skywalker name which she takes at the end of Rise of Skywalker.

While the odds are slim beyond the tease in Shadow of the Sithit would certainly be exciting if Star Wars one day confirms this potential truth about Rey being part of a Jedi bloodline beyond Palpatine, perhaps in the upcoming Star Wars movie starring Rey from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
