Stardew Valley: How To Get Hardwood

In the realm of Stardew Valley, players often rely on regular wood for their early game projects. However, as they progress, the need for Hardwood becomes apparent. Unlike regular wood, Hardwood is not easily obtained by chopping down trees, posing a challenge for players. Fortunately, the developers of Stardew Valley have introduced new methods of obtaining Hardwood through updates. With these updates came new recipes that require Hardwood, making it even more crucial for players to collect it whenever possible.

While certain methods of obtaining Hardwood do not require any upgrades to the player’s axe, it is highly recommended to upgrade it as much as possible. This is because one of the best ways to obtain Hardwood daily requires at least a Steel Axe, making it the most recommended upgrade.

Updated on July 7th, 2023, by Nikole Stewart: Gathering resources is just one of the many enjoyable activities players can engage in while playing Stardew Valley. It can be a daunting task, but exploring the map and discovering interesting areas is incredibly fun. One such area of interest is Hardwood, as it is a valuable item that can be quite challenging to acquire. Hardwood is essential for various crafting recipes and projects, making it necessary to farm at some point in the game. To assist players in efficiently collecting Hardwood, an additional section has been added to Stardew Valley Expanded at the bottom of this guide.

How to Find Hardwood in Stardew Valley
Hardwood can be obtained by chopping down several sources, including Mahogany Trees, Large Stumps, and Large Logs. Mahogany Trees can be chopped down with any axe, but they must be planted and grown by the player first. Large Stumps require a Copper Axe or better to be chopped down, while Large Logs require a Steel Axe or better. Mahogany Seeds can be obtained by shaking or chopping down Mahogany Trees, digging up a Mahogany Seed dropped from a fully grown Mahogany Tree, or by chopping up any other Hardwood source. They can also be obtained from Golden Coconuts from Ginger Island or dropped by Slimes in the Secret Woods. Additionally, players can trade one Stingray for a Mahogany Seed with the Island Trader.

The Secret Woods, located in the northwestern corner of Cindersap Forest, is the best place to consistently find Large Stumps. Six Large Stumps can be found there, and they respawn every day, allowing players to collect twelve pieces of Hardwood each day they visit. However, players must first chop down the Large Log blocking the path to the woods, which requires at least a Steel Axe. Large Stumps and Large Logs can also be found on players’ farms when they first start playing Stardew Valley. However, these sources do not respawn when players remove them, although the Hardwood obtained from them can still be used.

Another effective method of gathering Hardwood is by selecting the Forest Map when starting the game. This map not only allows players to forage but also features Large Stumps on the west side. As long as players do not place any buildings or structures in that area, the stumps will always respawn, providing a steady supply of Hardwood.

What is Hardwood Used For in Stardew Valley?
In the early game, players will not require much Hardwood to repair their farm. However, as time progresses, Hardwood becomes incredibly useful, as it is used in a variety of crafting recipes and is also required for certain quests. Here is a list of all the items that require Hardwood in Stardew Valley:

It is important to note that while Hardwood is a valuable resource, it is not a preferred gift for most villagers in Stardew Valley. Only Robin likes Hardwood, while every other villager dislikes it. Hardwood is also used to upgrade two buildings in Stardew Valley: Farmhouse Upgrade 2 and the Stable.

How to Get Hardwood in Expanded Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley Expanded is a mod that adds more content to the game, including new areas where players can collect valuable resources like Hardwood. Once the mod is downloaded, players will discover additional areas in the Valley that are perfect for farming Hardwood. One such area is the expanded version of the Secret Woods, which now features around twelve Large Stumps for players to chop down.

Stardew Valley is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.

While normal wood is fine for many early game projects in Stardew Valleyplayers will soon find that they need Hardwood for many different things. Unlike normal wood, Hardwood usually cannot be found or harvested by chopping down trees, making it a bit of a challenge to find.

Luckily, as more updates came to Stardew Valleymore methods of obtaining Hardwood have been added. This has come with more recipes calling for this resource, making it even more important for players to collect when possible.

Hardwood can be obtained by chopping down multiple sources. These sources are Mahogany Trees, Large Stumps, and Large Logs. Mahogany Trees can be chopped down with any Axe, but need to be planted by a player and grown first. Large Stumps can be chopped down with a Copper Axe or better. Finally, Large Logs can be chopped down with a Steel Axe or better.

Mahogany Seeds can be obtained by shaking or chopping down Mahogany Trees, digging up a Mahogany Seed dropped from a fully grown Mahogany Tree, or by chopping up any other Hardwood source. They can also be gotten from Golden Coconuts from Ginger Island or dropped by Slimes in the Secret Woods. Players can also trade one Stingray for a Mahogany Seed with the Island Trader.

The best place to find Large Stumps consistently is the Secret Woods located in the northwestern corner of Cindersap Forest. In it are six Large Stumps that respawn every day allowing players to get twelve pieces of Hardwood each day they visit. Players must first however chop down the Large Log blocking the path to the woods. As mentioned before, players will need at least a Steel Axe to do this.

Large Stumps and Large Logs can also be found on players’ farms when they first begin Stardew Valley. These however will not respawn when players remove them, but their Hardwood can still be used.

Another great way to ensure that players can gather hardwood is by selecting the Forest Map. It not only allows players to forage, but on the west side of the map, players will notice Large Stumps. If players don’t place any buildings or structures in that area, the stumps will always respawn to provide hardwood.
