Taylor Swift sweeps VMAs 2023, makes history with most Video of the Year wins

Taylor Swift dominated the MTV VMAs 2023 on Tuesday night, taking home four prestigious Moon Person awards, including Video of the Year and Song of the Year. The 33-year-old superstar graced the stage at New Jersey’s Prudential Center multiple times throughout the night to accept her awards for the smash hit “Anti-Hero.” In addition to Video and Song of the Year, she also won Best Pop and Best Direction. Despite being nominated for a total of 11 awards, many of which were not announced during the live broadcast, Swift graciously thanked her team on multiple occasions and even invited them to join her onstage and share the limelight. She also gave a special shoutout to her longtime writing partner Jack Antonoff, who unfortunately couldn’t attend the event.

During the live broadcast, Swift emerged victorious in the categories of Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, and Best Direction. It’s worth noting that she received the most nominations out of anyone, with a total of 11, but not all of them were announced during the show.

Furthermore, the “Karma” singer made history by becoming the first person to win Video of the Year four times, having previously won for “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Bad Blood,” and “You Need to Calm Down.” Swift’s VMAs appearance comes shortly after she referenced Kanye West’s infamous interruption of her acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV VMAs for Best Female Video, where she was awarded for “You Belong With Me.” During her fourth Eras Tour show at Mexico City’s Foro Sol stadium on August 27, the “Cruel Summer” singer took a subtle jab at the rapper, now 46 years old.

Swift surpassed her own record by winning Video of the Year for the fourth time, a feat that no one else has achieved. She also expressed her gratitude towards her longtime writing partner Jack Antonoff. “It’s the best way to be interrupted, by the way, just people chanting your name,” Swift remarked to the crowd, acknowledging the thunderous applause and deafening screams that momentarily drowned out her voice. “It’s really the only way to be interrupted. And I would know.” She made sure to include her team in the celebration, bringing them onstage to accept the awards together.

With 14 Moon Person trophies to her name, Swift stands as one of the most decorated VMA winners, second only to Madonna, who has 20. If she manages to win at least six out of her eight nominated categories during tonight’s ceremony, she could surpass the Queen of Pop’s record. This year, Swift is vying for Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Visual Effects, and Best Editing, all for her 2022 single “Anti-Hero.” Stay tuned for our real-time coverage of the 2023 VMAs!

Swift’s VMAs appearance comes weeks after she referenced Kanye West’s infamous 2009 interruption of her acceptance speech for Best Female Video trophy for “You Belong With Me.”

The “Cruel Summer” singer took aim at the rapper, 46, during the “Evermore” set of her fourth Eras Tour show at Mexico City’s Foro Sol stadium on Aug. 27.

During the infamous moment back in 2009, West grabbed the mic from Swift’s hands to declare that Beyoncé should have won the award instead.

“Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish. But Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” West said at the time of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” clip.

When Beyoncé won later on in the evening, she invited Swift onstage to “have her moment.”
