The Red Door Stars Ty Simpkins & Sinclair Daniel On Working With Patrick Wilson

Insidious: The Red Door takes place a decade after the events of Insidious: Chapter 2. Dalton Lambert, now a young adult, is embarking on his journey to a beautiful Ivy League university. However, as soon as his father, Josh, leaves him there, Dalton finds himself tormented by the demons of his past. In order to finally conquer these demons and put an end to the haunting nightmare that has plagued the Lambert family, Josh and Dalton must venture back into The Further. The film features the return of Patrick Wilson, Ty Simpkins, Rose Byrne, Andrew Astor, and Lin Shaye, reprising their roles from previous Insidious installments. Joining the cast are Hiam Abbass, Sinclair Daniel, Peter Dager, and Jarquez McClendon. Insidious: The Red Door marks Wilson’s directorial debut and is written by Scott Teems, with James Wan, Jason Blum, and Leigh Whannell serving as producers. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Ty Simpkins and Sinclair Daniel discuss their experiences working on Insidious: The Red Door. Simpkins shares his thoughts on collaborating with Wilson as a director and delving into the theme of trauma through Dalton’s story. Meanwhile, Daniel provides insight into her character, Kris, and her journey working alongside Wilson. Screen Rant: I am thrilled to see the return of the Lambert family in the Insidious franchise. Sinclair, your character is an incredible addition to the series. Ty, it’s impressive to see you take on a leading role as an adult in this film. Can you discuss what it was like returning to Insidious and the unique qualities you brought to the character of Dalton? Ty Simpkins: I am incredibly proud to be a part of this film and to have Patrick, whom I have known for a long time, directing it. A lot of our discussions revolved around how trauma affects adults and how Dalton’s past experiences in the first two movies shaped him into the person he is today. We wanted to explore his desires, aspirations, and how he navigates his life. Sinclair Daniel: Thank you! Kris is indeed a loyal and supportive character. She is the ride or die type, willing to venture into the depths of the underworld for the ones she cares about. Playing her was a joy because she doesn’t overanalyze situations like I do in real life. She just goes for it, driven by her unwavering devotion. It’s empowering to portray such a strong and resilient character. Screen Rant: Ty, you have worked with Patrick before, both as your on-screen father in the Insidious films and in Little Children. However, this is the first time he has taken on the role of director. Can you discuss how his directorial style influenced Insidious: The Red Door? Ty Simpkins: Patrick and I have developed a strong bond over the years due to our previous collaborations. I find that I deliver my best performances when I have a close relationship with the director. Being able to openly discuss character thoughts and align them with Patrick’s vision creates a solid foundation for our work. It was a bit intimidating at first, considering the amount of screen time I have in this movie, but having Patrick as the director provided a comforting presence. Screen Rant: The chemistry between Dalton and Kris is captivating. Sinclair, can you share your experience building that chemistry with Ty and what surprised you the most about joining the Insidious franchise? Sinclair Daniel: Thank you! Working on this franchise was a unique experience for me since my character, Kris, is a new addition to the Lambert storyline, which has been established for some time. Patrick gave me the freedom to explore and improvise, which was surprising and exhilarating. Our rehearsal period was helpful, and since most of my scenes are with Ty, we had the opportunity to develop a genuine rapport. Our on-screen relationship was greatly influenced by our off-screen friendship. Patrick Wilson looks concerned in Insidious The Red Door

Screen Rant: I love the Insidious franchise, it feels so good to be back with the Lambert family, it’s like revisiting old friends. Sinclair, this is my favorite new character in the franchise, absolutely incredible. Ty, you’ve grown up before our eyes in this franchise, can you talk about returning to Insidious as an adult lead in this film, and what you wanted to bring to the role of Dalton that wasn’t on the page?

Ty Simpkins: Yeah, I’m so proud to have this be the thing that’s doing it, and have Patrick, who I’ve known for so long, be at the helm of it. A lot of it was just me and Patrick kind of talking about how trauma affects adults, and how the past trauma of the first two movies would affect Dalton, the type of person that he would have grown into, and just who he is, and what he wants to be, and what he wants to do with his life.

Now, Sinclair, everyone needs a Kris in their life, I truly believe that she’s a true ride or die. Can you tell me a little bit about Kris?

Sinclair Daniel: Yeah, I think you kind of just said it, she is a ride or die. Literally, she will go to the underworld with you, she’s, she’s there for you. And she was so fun to play, because in a lot of situations where I would start overanalyzing, she doesn’t. So, it was like she’s just gonna go for it, because if it’s somebody she cares about, there’s no hesitation. It’s such an empowering quality in a person, and a friend, and a character to play.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Now, Ty, Patrick has played your dad in the first two Insidious films, but you guys go all the way back to 2006 with Little Childrenwhere he played your dad also. But this is the first time he’s ever stepped behind the camera as a director, can you talk to me about what his directing style added to Insidious: The Red Door?

Ty Simpkins: Yeah, with all of that kind of past history, he and I have cultivated a really good relationship over the years, and I find that my best performances come out when you’re that close with the director, when you’re able to talk about things that you think about the character, and then understand what he wants from you, and expects from you so you can kind of find some solid ground in the middle there. Just to have someone that — like, this is a big deal for me, it was very intimidating, the first couple days I was like, “I’m in a lot of this movie, it’s probably the most screen time I’ve ever had,” so having him there was very comforting, and it was great.

Now, Sinclair, I love the chemistry between Dalton and Kris, can you talk about building that chemistry with Ty, and what surprised you the most about entering the Insidious franchise?

Sinclair Daniel: Yeah, I think I’ll reverse answer those questions, so what surprised me the most about entering this franchise is that I am now a person who’s not really existed in the Lambert storyline, because it’s very insular, now, we’re bursting it open in this one a little bit. So, I was just surprised with the free rein that Patrick gave me in the trust to kind of be like, “Yes, say whatever, make it weird, improv.” I was like, “Oh, okay!”

So, we had a brief rehearsal period, which was really helpful with Patrick, and then all of my scenes are pretty much with Ty. So, every day I’m on set, Ty’s on set, and it’s usually just the two of us, so we got to joking, and playing around, and it got to be like that relationship you see on screen, it really informed the personal relationship.
