The Witcher Season 3: All Filming Locations

Geralt of Rivia has made his triumphant return in another captivating season of Netflix’s hit show, The Witcher. This season is set to be the final one for Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt, as Liam Hemsworth will take over for season 4. Despite this, Cavill still got to experience some breathtaking filming locations for this installment.

The production team behind The Witcher is well-versed in selecting picturesque landscapes from Central and Eastern Europe. In previous seasons, they have filmed in Hungary, the Canary Islands, and Poland, the home of the source material’s writer, Andrzej Sapkowski. Let’s take a closer look at the stunning locations visited for season 3.

The filming for The Witcher season 3 began in April 2022 and concluded in September of the same year. The first scenes were shot on the frozen Lake Laghi di Fusine, located in Tarvisio, Italy. This location provided a stunning backdrop for Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan as they portrayed Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, respectively. It served as the perfect hiding spot for the trio as they evaded those searching for the Elder Blood.

Another notable location visited was Predjama Castle in Slovenia, which stood in for Vuilpanne Castle. Built into a cave on the side of a cliff, this medieval castle added an air of mystery to the show. Special effects were used to enhance the castle’s appearance, creating additional turrets and towers.

The Nanos Plateau, also in Slovenia, offered a picturesque setting with its lush greenery and panoramic views of the Vipava Valley. This location was reminiscent of the majestic peaks found in the Scottish Highlands, which had been previously featured in the show.

Moving east, the crew traveled to Stara Baška, a village in Croatia. Here, they filmed at Zala Beach, a popular holiday destination known for its crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches. This location can be seen in the season 3 trailer as Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri flee from the Wild Hunt and other forces pursuing them.

In Wales, the production team utilized the scenic Nash Point Lighthouse, located on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast. This historic lighthouse, which has stood since 1832, provided a dramatic setting for Geralt, Ciri, and Jaskier as they embarked on their journey.

Three Cliffs Bay, also in Wales, served as the enchanting Thanedd Island in the show. With its limestone cliffs, rock pools, and sand dunes, this thumb-shaped peninsula offers a breathtaking view of the west coast of Wales. It is no wonder why it is one of the most photographed places in Gower.

Jolly Farm in Kent, England, served as the filming location for the show’s tavern scenes. This idyllic farm offers a rustic setting with its old-fashioned farmhouses, stable yards, and plenty of animals to complete the atmosphere.

Virginia Water Lake, situated on the border of Berkshire and Surrey, provided a picturesque backdrop for night shoots during season 3. Surrounded by the stunning 13th-century waterfall known as The Cascade and the Roman ruins of The Leptis Magna, this location added an element of grandeur to the show.

Guildford Cathedral in Surrey, England, was chosen as the real-world location for Emperor Emhyr’s Nilfgaard Palace. This magnificent cathedral, designed by Edward Maufe, has stood since its completion in the mid-20th century. It also served as the Dream Palace in Netflix’s The Sandman.

The Strawberry Hill Ponds in Epping Forest, England, brought the Belleteyn Festival to life. The expansive woodland, filled with conifers and sweet chestnuts, provided the perfect setting for the festival-themed scenes.

Lastly, Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, served as the base for season 3 filming. This state-of-the-art studio, located on the grounds of a historic manor house, provided the necessary indoor space for various scenes. Netflix recently signed a long-term lease with the studio, solidifying their partnership.

With its diverse range of stunning locations, The Witcher season 3 promises to transport viewers to captivating worlds filled with magic, adventure, and breathtaking landscapes. Get ready for another thrilling season of this beloved series.

Geralt of Rivia has returned for another dark, but eye-widening season of Netflix’s The Witcher, albeit the final run for Henry Cavill. The role of Geralt will soon be passed on to Liam Hemsworth for season 4, but the Superman star still got his fill of stunning locations for this block.

The second location visited in Slovenia by The Witcher crew is the Nanos Plateau, located at the eastern border of the Inner Carniola in southwestern Slovenia. The karst limestone plateau stretches 6 kilometers within the northern part of the Dinaric Alps.

This location boasts high ridges thriving with greenery and serves stunning views of the surrounding Vipava Valley, mimicking the giant peaks found in the Scottish Highlands–previously visited by The Witcher production.

The white lighthouse has stood proudly next to the coast since 1832 and was a beacon to assist mariners through Nash Sands. The surrounding sediment is full of fossils, cliffs, and rock pools, and the sea harbors many Roman shipwrecks.

Three Cliffs Bay, Wales

The second location visited in Wales was Three Cliffs Bay in Swansea, which serves as Thanedd Island in The Witcher season 3. Located northwest of Gors Velen in Temeria, this island is a prominent location in season 3, and it’s home to the Aretuza Academy.

Made up of limestone cliffs, rock pools, and sand dunes, Three Cliffs Bay is a thumb-shaped peninsula offering a panoramic view of Wales’ west coast, and it’s one of the most photographed places to visit in Gower.

Jolly Farm, England

Standing in for taverns featured in season 3 is Jolly Farm, situated in Kent, England, and it’s one of many farms in the area that offers a setting for film and television productions with old-fashioned farmhouses and stable yards in mind.

The Jolly Farm provides 250 acres of farmland, parkland, and woodland, alongside the Norman Bridge and surrounding cottages, with plenty of animals looking on, including chickens, horses, sheep, cattle, and peacocks.

Virginia Water Lake, England

Located on the border of Berkshire and Surrey lies the Virginia Water Lake, and season 3 filming performed night shoots at this location surrounded by the 13th-century waterfall, The Cascade, and The Leptis Magna Roman Ruins.

Dwelling in Windsor Great Park and originally used as a Royal pleasure ground, Virginia Water Lake is 2 miles long and hosted local hunting grounds dating back to the early 1600s. Park ranger and son of King George II, William Augustus, turned the lake into the grounds it is today with the help of architect Henry Flitcroft.

Guildford Cathedral, England

Standing in as the real-world location for Emperor Emhyr’s Nilfgaard Palace in season 3 is The Guildford Cathedral situated in Surrey, England, and this location was also used to bring the Dream Palace to life in Netflix’s The Sandman.

The interior of Nilfgaard Palace was shot within a studio in season 2, but the exterior boasts the cathedral’s scale, and the building–designed by Edward Maufe–has been standing since its creation between 1936 and 1961.

Strawberry Hill Ponds, England

Belleteyn Festival was brought to life courtesy of the Strawberry Hill Ponds within Epping Forest, England, and the production dotted the expanse with various tents, kegs, braziers, and tables to set the festival theme.

Strawberry Hill promises endless woodland filled with conifers and sweet chestnuts, and it’s part of a circular walk that also includes Mount Pleasant and Connaught Water. Previously serving as old Royal hunting grounds, Epping Forest stretches over 6,000 acres located within Northeast London.

Longcross Studios, Surrey

The Witcher has always tackled a lot of on-location filming. However, some scenes have to be shot within a studio space. That’s where Longcross Studios located in Surrey, England stepped in and acted as a base for season 3 filming.

A majority of The Witcher’s interior scenes were likely filmed within Longcross Studios, which is built on the site of a 150-year-old manor house and has been in business since 2006, with Netflix recently signing a long-term lease in 2021 to expand its operations.
